IWC Gives the Big Pilot Perpetual Calendar ProSet a Mercedes-Benz Anniversary Edition

IWC’s latest Big Pilot ties two very mechanical worlds together.

The Big Pilot’s Watch Perpetual Calendar ProSet 140 Years Mercedes-Benz marks the carmaker’s 140th anniversary with a limited edition that leans into black, gold and serious calendar engineering.

It’s also a reminder that IWC’s relationship with Mercedes-Benz runs deeper than logo placement, stretching from AMG PETRONAS Formula 1 editions to watches shaped by the language of performance cars.

The anniversary treatment is direct but not overworked.

IWC has chosen a gloss black dial with applied solid gold markers and gold-plated hands, giving the watch a more formal edge than the usual instrument-watch language of the Big Pilot.

The familiar layout is still there, with a broad dial opening, a narrow polished bezel and the oversized diamond-shaped crown that has long been part of the Big Pilot identity.

At 42.9mm, the case brings the perpetual calendar into a more wearable footprint than the classic 46mm Big Pilot format, while keeping the visual scale that makes the model recognisable.

Water resistance is rated to 100 metres, which is unusually practical territory for a perpetual calendar and useful for a watch intended to feel less fragile than its complication count might suggest.

The ProSet calendar is the real point of interest

The key technical feature is IWC’s Calibre 82655, an automatic perpetual calendar movement built around the brand’s ProSet adjustment system.

Most perpetual calendars require care, patience and often recessed correctors when setting indications after the watch has stopped.

Here, the indications can be adjusted bidirectionally through the crown, which makes the complication easier to live with and reduces the intimidation factor that often comes with owning a QP.

The system uses a stacked program wheel to coordinate the date, day, month, four-digit year and moon phase displays.

It also uses a special leap year wheel with retractable fingers to handle February’s irregular length, a small but important detail in a mechanism designed to remain mechanically organised for decades.

The movement runs at 4Hz, offers a 60-hour power reserve and uses IWC’s Pellaton automatic winding system.

It also features a LIGA nickel-phosphorus escapement and a silicon hairspring, placing modern materials inside a watch whose appeal is deeply tied to old-school mechanical problem-solving.

A calendar dial with Big Pilot legibility

The perpetual calendar indications sit within recessed subdials without turning the watch into a cluttered technical diagram.

The dial displays the date, day of the week, month and year in four digits, along with a double moon phase for the northern and southern hemispheres.

That four-digit year display remains one of IWC’s signature perpetual calendar touches, giving the watch a distinctive visual anchor.

Super-LumiNova on the hands and markers preserves nighttime legibility, which matters on a Big Pilot more than it might on a dressier perpetual calendar.

The black rubber strap keeps the watch grounded in a modern sports-watch context, while the folding clasp and EasX-Change system make strap swaps straightforward.
