Hublot Gives Jeff Koons’ Balloon Dog the Classic Fusion Treatment

Jeff Koons’ Balloon Dog has always played with contradiction, making something light and temporary feel permanent and almost architectural.

Hublot’s new collaboration follows that logic closely, not by printing the artwork onto a dial, but by reshaping two watches around its inflated visual language.

The result is led by the Classic Fusion Balloon Dog by Jeff Koons, joined by the far more technical MP-14 Origin.

The Classic Fusion becomes a metal balloon

The Classic Fusion Balloon Dog takes one of Hublot’s more restrained silhouettes and gives it an unexpectedly soft, pressurised look.

The 42mm by 11mm case keeps the basic Classic Fusion footprint, but nearly every visible surface has been made more convex.

The sapphire crystal is raised and rounded, the bezel swells outward, and even the H-shaped titanium screws have domed heads rather than the usual flatter profile.

It’s a clever translation because the watch doesn’t simply borrow the Balloon Dog as a motif.

Instead, the object itself appears to have been inflated from within, which is a more ambitious reading of Koons’ sculpture than a decorative collaboration would have offered.

Colour, crown and dial details

The Classic Fusion Balloon Dog is offered in polished stainless steel, red anodised aluminium and blue anodised aluminium.

The steel version leans into the reflective quality of Koons’ work, while the aluminium editions allow Hublot to reach the saturated red and blue tones associated with the artist’s polished sculptures.

The crown is shaped to resemble a balloon inflation valve, using metal and rubber to make the idea tactile rather than merely visual.

At 10:30, a flexible rubber “dog tail” protrudes from the case, a small but unmistakably playful detail.

The dial carries Hublot’s logo and Koons’ signature, with a polished inflated construction and domed appliques filled with three-dimensional white Super-LumiNova.

The hands also use raised Super-LumiNova inserts, while the seconds hand adds a Balloon Dog-shaped counterweight.

A date window sits at 3 o’clock, using white numerals on a black disc across all three versions.

The movements carry the theme inside

The Classic Fusion Balloon Dog is powered by Hublot’s HUB1710 automatic calibre, using the Zenith Elite 670 architecture.

The movement measures 25.6mm across and 3.7mm thick, with 185 components, 27 jewels, a 4Hz frequency and a 50-hour power reserve.

Its anthracite ruthenium-treated mainplate and bridges keep the view contemporary, while the polished rhodium-plated oscillating weight has been reshaped with an inflated effect.

The integrated strap continues the theme with a debossed metallic leather or polymer insert and a deployant buckle designed with the same softened profile.

The MP-14 Origin pushes the collaboration into high complication

Alongside the Classic Fusion editions, Hublot has created the MP-14 Origin by Jeff Koons as the more complex expression of the project.

This 44mm watch uses an octagonal sapphire-and-titanium case and introduces Hublot’s first automatic central tourbillon.

The sapphire case requires around 534 hours of machining, underlining just how much of this watch is about engineering a transparent sculptural object.

Time is displayed through two rotating concentric rings for the hours and minutes, indicated by suspended red and grey stainless-steel cubes.

The two outer rings remain fixed, while the ring assembly is set with 202 baguette-cut diamonds and blue sapphires totalling approximately 2.6 carats.

At the centre, the tourbillon sits beneath a transparent sapphire dome coated with translucent blue varnish.

The HUB9014 manufacture calibre, made with Concepto, uses 594 components, runs at 21,600 vibrations per hour and offers a 60-hour power reserve.

A peripheral oscillating weight provides automatic winding without blocking the open architecture.

What makes this collaboration interesting is that Koons’ Balloon Dog has altered the watches as objects, not just as surfaces.

The Classic Fusion editions bring the idea into a wearable, limited format, while the MP-14 Origin turns it into a transparent mechanical sculpture for the most committed Hublot collectors.
