Grand Seiko Revisits a Quiet Milestone With the Elegance SBGW325

Grand Seiko’s newest Elegance model looks back to a watch that helped define its modern hand-wound dress-watch language.

The SBGW325 takes its cue from the 2001 SBGW003, the first Grand Seiko fitted with a manual-winding 9S movement, and translates that quietly important reference into a deep navy limited edition.

It’s not a loud anniversary piece, which is exactly the point.

The SBGW003 matters because of the movement inside it.

Released in 2001, it introduced Grand Seiko’s first modern manual-winding 9S calibre, the 9S54, and helped lay the groundwork for the brand’s current hand-wound dress watches.

The new SBGW325 doesn’t try to reproduce that watch line for line, but it keeps the essential mood intact.

Its most obvious link is the dial architecture, especially the raised Arabic numerals that give the face more character than a simple baton-marker layout.

That detail gives the watch a slightly vintage formality without making it feel nostalgic for nostalgia’s sake.

Deep navy, raised numerals and a compact steel case

The SBGW325 uses a 37.3mm stainless steel case, a size that sits firmly in traditional dress-watch territory.

At 11.7mm thick and 44.3mm lug to lug, it should suit collectors who prefer Grand Seiko’s quieter proportions rather than the broader visual presence of some of its sportier models.

The case is Zaratsu polished and fitted with a box-shaped sapphire crystal with internal anti-reflective coating.

Water resistance is listed as splash resistant, which keeps the watch firmly in dress-piece territory rather than everyday all-conditions use.

The dial is the main draw.

Its matte deep navy tone takes inspiration from traditional Japanese indigo dyeing, while the silver-toned raised numerals and faceted Dauphine hands keep the layout crisp.

Grand Seiko adds restrained warmth through the gold-coloured seconds hand and applied GS logo.

The modern 9S64 manual-winding calibre

Inside the SBGW325 is the calibre 9S64, the current manual-winding movement that descends from the earlier 9S54 family.

It runs at 28,800 vibrations per hour and offers a 72-hour power reserve, a practical improvement over the 50-hour reserve of the early 9S54.

Grand Seiko rates the calibre to +5 to -3 seconds per day.

The movement is visible through the sapphire caseback, with finishing that includes striping and a concave barrel cover.

Two straps and a limited boutique release

The SBGW325 is supplied with two leather straps, both using quick-release spring bars.

The first is a hand-dyed blue crocodile strap for a tonal look, while the second is a light grey cow leather strap that gives the watch a softer, more casual contrast.

Production is limited to 600 pieces.

The watch is scheduled to arrive at Grand Seiko Boutiques in October 2026, with pricing set at EUR 5,700 and USD 5,800.
