Glashütte Original Gives the Senator Chronograph a Cleaner 2026 Shape

Glashütte Original’s Senator Chronograph has always occupied an interesting place in German watchmaking, sitting between Saxon formality and serious mechanical timing.

For 2026, the watch returns with a noticeably slimmer case, a quieter dial and a new split personality that gives buyers a choice between classical dress chronograph and aviation-leaning instrument.

The result is less crowded, more wearable and better defined than the Senator Chronograph models that came before it.

The biggest physical change is the case, now measuring 41mm across and 12.9mm thick.

That trims the watch down from the previous 42mm format and reduces the height by a meaningful margin, giving the chronograph a more settled profile on the wrist.

Short, curved lugs should help the case sit naturally, while the stainless-steel construction mixes polished and satin-brushed surfaces in familiar Glashütte Original fashion.

The sapphire crystal has anti-reflective coating on both sides, and the movement remains visible through a sapphire display back.

Mushroom-style pushers at 2 and 4 o’clock replace the earlier rounded rectangular pushers, lending the watch a more traditional chronograph silhouette.

Water resistance is 50 metres, which is lower than the 100-metre rating of earlier models but still appropriate for a refined automatic chronograph rather than a sports watch.

Two dials, two very different characters

The regular Senator Chronograph is the more formal of the pair, with a silver-white galvanic dial and fine grainé texture.

Applied solid-gold Roman numerals with blue coating sit around the dial, while blued-steel hands reinforce the watch’s traditional Saxon character.

The small seconds at 9 o’clock and 30-minute chronograph counter at 3 o’clock are recessed, each with a subtle grooved finish that gives the surface more depth without adding clutter.

At 6 o’clock, the Panorama Date is framed in white gold and feels better integrated now that the surrounding dial architecture has been simplified.

The 2026 layout removes the 12-hour chronograph counter and the former power-reserve indication, opening up the dial and allowing the Glashütte Original signature to sit below 12 o’clock.

The Senator Chronograph Navigator takes the same mechanical foundation in a more functional direction.

Its matte black lacquered dial uses large Arabic numerals made from solid luminous material, matched with luminous hour and minute hands for stronger legibility.

The central chronograph seconds hand, 30-minute counter and small seconds are finished in white lacquer, while the crown shape helps underline the pilot-watch influence.

Both models use a tachymeter scale on the flange, but the overall effect is different enough that the Navigator feels like a true second personality rather than a simple dial colour.

Calibre 37-24 keeps the integrated flyback architecture

Inside both versions is the Calibre 37-24, an evolution of Glashütte Original’s in-house Calibre 37 introduced in 2014.

It remains an integrated automatic chronograph with column-wheel control, which matters because the chronograph functions are designed into the movement rather than added as a module.

The movement measures 34.20mm in diameter and 8mm thick, helping make the slimmer case possible while retaining the key functions.

It displays hours, minutes, small seconds, a 30-minute counter, Panorama Date and a flyback chronograph.

The flyback function allows the chronograph to be stopped, reset and restarted with a single press, a practical feature for repeated timing and one that feels especially well suited to the Navigator.

The movement runs at 28,800 vibrations per hour and offers a 70-hour power reserve.

It also uses a silicon balance spring for improved resistance to magnetic fields and temperature changes, with regulation handled by solid-gold screws on the balance rim and Glashütte Original’s swan-neck fine adjustment.

Viewed from the back, the movement delivers the expected Saxon visual language, including a three-quarter plate with Glashütte stripes, bevelled edges, polished steel parts and blued screws.

A newly developed skeletonised rotor carries a 21-carat gold oscillation weight and the brand’s mirrored “G” emblem.

Straps, bracelet and collection positioning

Both the Senator Chronograph and Senator Chronograph Navigator can be ordered on Louisiana alligator leather, a sand-coloured synthetic strap or a stainless-steel bracelet.

A quick-change system lets the wearer swap straps without tools, and the folding clasp now also has a quick-change mechanism so it can be moved between straps more easily.

That small ownership detail suits the two-watch concept, especially for anyone who sees the classical model as an office-to-evening piece or the Navigator as a more casual daily chronograph.

The watches are offered through Glashütte Original boutiques and authorised retailers and will be part of the permanent collection.
