A debut watch is a statement of intent, especially in independent watchmaking.
These five newcomers don’t follow one formula, which is exactly what makes them worth a closer look.
From hand-finished dress watches to a clever day-night display in steel, each one shows how much room remains for personality outside the established names.

At a glance
- Five debut watches from Marcu, Neode, Atelier Pieters, Voxel and Alexandre Martin show very different approaches to modern independent watchmaking.
- The standout details include hand-finished movements, titanium and platinum cases, a 192-hour power reserve, a tourbillon, and a self-developed 12/24-hour indication module.
- Production is limited across all five, with confirmed prices ranging from EUR 2,500 before VAT to CHF 148,500 before VAT.
High-finish dress watches with serious intent
The renewed appetite for restrained, time-only dress watches has given small independent makers a useful stage, because there’s nowhere for weak proportions or poor finishing to hide.
Marcu enters that space with the Initial, a 40mm grade 5 titanium watch from veteran watchmaker Jérôme Marcu.
The case is slim in spirit rather than measurement at 13.10mm, but the detail is in the way the sapphire crystal meets the case, the three-dimensional chapter ring, and the pine-needle motif dial offered in blue, anthracite or gold.

The manually wound calibre JM01 is the main event from the back, with German silver plates and bridges, a steel balance bridge, and 75 inward hand-bevelled edges.
Limited to 33 pieces across 11 examples per dial colour, the Initial sits in a serious collector bracket at CHF 59,000 before VAT.
Alexandre Martin’s 1965 is more compact and quietly classical, though no less focused.

Named after his father’s birth year, the watch is made by the 28-year-old Belgian watchmaker in Morges, Switzerland, and uses a 38mm stainless steel case that measures 9.35mm thick.
The composition is direct and carefully judged, with a three-part gold dial, an enamel small seconds subdial, and hand-polished steel hands.
Inside is an extensively reworked and hand-finished vintage CYMA 586 manually wound movement with German silver bridges.

Only 12 steel examples are planned, priced at CHF 65,000.
Contemporary ideas beyond the traditional dress watch
Neode’s N01 First Edition takes the same broad idea of a refined time-only watch and gives it a cooler, more architectural character.
The brand was founded in London by architect Marius-Daniel Dumitrascu, and the watch reflects a collaborative approach to suppliers and execution.

Its grade 5 titanium case is made by Voutilainen, the 925 silver sector dial is made by Les Cadraniers de Genève, and the manually wound movement is derived from Chronode’s C101.
The most intriguing practical detail is a subtle, almost hidden power reserve indication, backed by a substantial 192-hour reserve.
At 39.5mm wide and 7.9mm thick without the crystals, the N01 First Edition has the dimensions to feel refined rather than precious, with a deep blue cut-to-size rubber strap adding a modern finish.

It is limited to 25 pieces and priced at CHF 26,400 before VAT.
Voxel comes from a different corner of the market with the Meridion VX01-E, which is the most accessible watch here and also one of the most conceptually distinct.
Created by entrepreneur Thibault Lux and technical director Bruno Herbet, the Meridion uses a self-developed 12:24 time indication module on top of a Soprod Newton P092 automatic movement.

The display can switch between AM and PM scales through 12 dial cutouts, giving the watch a clear mechanical talking point without moving into high-complication pricing.
The 41.4mm octagonal 904L stainless steel case is rated to 120 metres, and the watch can be worn on suede leather or an integrated 904L steel bracelet.
Production is limited to 300 pieces across charcoal, blue and silver dial versions, with prices set at EUR 2,500 on strap or EUR 2,850 on bracelet before VAT.

A tourbillon debut with architectural ambition
Atelier Pieters sits at the most elaborate end of this selection with the Atelier 1 Founders’ Series.
Founded by husband and wife Maarten and Jessica Pieters, the brand opens with a large platinum watch that places movement architecture and finishing front and centre.
The case measures 43.5mm wide and 13mm thick, which gives the in-house calibre T2-03RM room to make a visual statement.

The movement uses German silver bridges with a frosted texture, hand-bevelled edges, and a large tourbillon escapement suspended beneath a black-polished bridge.
Its double power reserve indication is a notable signature, with one display visible on the back and a second subtly integrated into the dial as a dot at 3 o’clock.
The Atelier 1 Founders’ Series is limited to 8 pieces per colourway in anthracite or gold, with stated capacity of 4 pieces per year, and is priced at CHF 148,500 before VAT.

The most compelling thing about this group is how little overlap there is between them.
For collectors watching the next generation of independents, these five debuts offer a useful map of the field, from near-classical restraint to inventive mechanical display and uncompromising hand-finishing.
