Glashütte has never lacked heavyweight names, but its newest independent arrival is aiming for a different corner of the Saxon watchmaking landscape.
Deutsche Uhrenmanufaktur Glashütte, better known as DUG Glashütte, has introduced the Purist Typ 1 as a straightforward automatic watch with local substance, restrained design and pricing that feels unusually grounded for the region.
It’s not trying to be a miniature grand complication or a nostalgia exercise. Its appeal is simpler than that, with honest proportions, visible finishing and enough Glashütte character to make the name on the dial matter.

A new Glashütte name with a practical brief
DUG Glashütte was founded by Toni Brodführer and positions itself around watchmaking with genuine regional input rather than a purely cosmetic connection to Saxony.
The Glashütte/SA marking on the dial isn’t decoration.
To use the designation, a watch must meet local requirements, including a substantial share of value creation in the region and key assembly work carried out there.
That context is central to the Purist Typ 1, because its price sits well below the territory usually associated with Glashütte’s established luxury houses.

The Purist case and dial keep things deliberately clean
The Purist Typ 1 uses a three-part stainless steel case measuring 40mm across, 10.95mm thick and 47.5mm lug to lug.
Those dimensions put it in everyday-watch territory, with enough presence to feel modern but not so much size that it loses the restrained character of the design.
The case mixes brushed and polished surfaces, while sapphire crystal is fitted front and back.
A diamond-shaped knurled crown signed by DUG adds one of the more distinctive external touches, avoiding the anonymous feel that can creep into watches at this price.
The dial is where the Purist name earns its keep.
It uses a grained surface, applied markers, luminous accents and sword-shaped central hour and minute hands, with a slim central seconds hand keeping the display crisp.
Colour options include Onyx Black, Moon White and Royal Blue, alongside Granit Grey and Tonka Brown special-edition dials, with Tonka Brown currently sold out.
On the blue and grey dials, the large central area shifts subtly toward the dark minute ring, giving the otherwise spare layout a little depth without crowding it.
A date display is optional and placed at 6 o’clock inside a bevelled aperture, with the disc matched to the dial colour.

The Calibre DUG 400 gives the watch its Glashütte substance
The movement is the most interesting part of the Purist Typ 1’s value proposition.
DUG starts with the Sellita SW400, then works with regional partners including Malon, a precision engineering company connected to Bruno Söhnle, to create the Calibre DUG 400.
Each movement is disassembled, hand-finished, reassembled, tested and encased with work carried out in Glashütte.
The technical base remains familiar, which is no bad thing in a watch intended for regular use.
The automatic movement runs at 28,800 vibrations per hour, offers a 40-hour power reserve and is regulated to plus 2 seconds per day.
Decoration includes perlage on the bridges and plates, heat-blued screws and a custom openworked rotor with 24k gold plating.
Seen through the sapphire back, it gives the watch a more considered feel than a standard off-the-shelf automatic hidden behind a solid caseback.

The Purist line includes several configurations beyond the Typ 1, including the Typ 2 and a Typ 2 California Dial.
Most versions can be ordered with or without the date display, giving buyers a choice between a cleaner dial and added daily practicality.
The watch is available on a genuine Buffalo leather strap with a steel pin buckle, or on a three-link stainless steel bracelet.
The bracelet adds EUR 100, and the date function adds another EUR 100.
