Czapek Turns Boris Vian’s Surrealist Love Story Into an Enamel Promenade

Czapek’s Promenade collection was built as a compact, time-only platform with room for artistic mischief, and the newest model leans fully into that idea.

The Promenade L’Écume des Jours draws from Boris Vian’s surreal 1947 novel, using métiers d’art craft to turn two of the book’s most memorable images into a dial that feels more like a miniature stage than a conventional dress watch.

Limited to 18 pieces, it pairs a 38mm steel case with a blue Grand Feu enamel dial, a water lily small seconds display and a peripheral keyboard rendered in mother-of-pearl and paint.

L’Écume des Jours, known in English as Froth on the Daydream, is a tragic love story shaped by dream logic, jazz, romance and illness.

Czapek has focused on two images from the novel, Colin’s pianocktail and the water lily connected to Chloé’s illness.

Those ideas could easily have become decorative references, but the dial treats them as functional design elements.

The brand’s Goutte d’Eau pattern appears here in deep blue Grand Feu enamel by Donzé Cadrans, with ripples radiating outward from the small seconds at 4:30.

That off-centre seconds display becomes the watch’s most theatrical detail.

MD’Art created a jade lily pad for the sub-dial, laser-etched with the seconds track, while a hand-painted water lily cut from lightweight titanium turns at the centre to mark the passing seconds.

Around the edge of the dial, the pianocktail is suggested by a keyboard motif made from a white mother-of-pearl ring with hand-painted black keys.

It’s a clever use of the Promenade layout, giving the watch literary character without compromising legibility.

The compact Promenade case keeps the art wearable

The case follows the proportions of the wider Promenade family, measuring 38mm across and 10.8mm thick with a 42mm lug-to-lug length.

Polished stainless steel gives it a dress-watch profile, while recessed flanks with sandblasted interiors add a sharper architectural note.

A glassbox sapphire crystal sits over the dial, and a sapphire display back gives a view of Czapek’s automatic calibre SXH5.1.

The watch is paired with a dark blue nubuck leather strap and steel pin buckle, though it can also be ordered with a steel Milanese mesh bracelet.

With 50 metres of water resistance, it remains more refined daily companion than fragile cabinet piece.

The SXH5.1 movement and Czapek’s bridge language

Inside is Czapek’s in-house automatic calibre SXH5.1, a micro-rotor movement measuring 30mm wide and 4.2mm thick.

Its platinum micro-rotor helps maintain a slimmer profile while delivering a 60-hour power reserve from a single barrel.

The movement runs at 4Hz and uses a variable inertia balance fitted with four gold inertia blocks.

Visually, the calibre is defined by seven openworked, sandblasted black bridges, a contemporary nod to François Czapek’s 19th-century pocket watches.

That balance between historical reference and modern construction is a fitting match for a watch that turns literature into horology without feeling nostalgic.
