Chopard’s Happy Diamonds has always been one of watchmaking’s more charming acts of rebellion.
For the 50th anniversary of its 1976 icon, the maison is returning to the idea in a notably faithful way, with a new Happy Diamonds Heritage that restores the cushion-shaped geometry, black onyx dial and free-floating diamond display that made the concept so distinctive.
It’s playful, but not frivolous, and that balance is exactly where this watch finds its appeal.

The 1976 idea returns
The Happy Diamonds concept began with a simple but unconventional thought.
Instead of locking diamonds into fixed settings, Chopard allowed them to move freely across the dial, catching light as the wrist moved.
The first 1976 watch was cushion-shaped, made in white gold and fitted with 30 floating diamonds.

Although Happy Diamonds later became closely associated with Chopard’s jewellery watches for women, the earliest version was conceived as a one-off men’s watch and went on to win the Golden Rose of Baden-Baden jewellery competition.
The inspiration is one of those details that still feels vivid decades later.
Designer Ronald Kurowski wanted to capture the sparkle of sunlight on water spray at a waterfall in the Black Forest, translating that sense of motion into a watch display.

There was a practical challenge behind the romance.
Loose diamonds are hard enough to damage surfaces and awkward enough to flip over, so Chopard enclosed each stone in a small gold capsule with a curved, bevelled base, allowing the diamonds to turn and glide without harming the dial architecture.
Black onyx and yellow gold sharpen the silhouette
The Happy Diamonds Heritage stays close to the late-1970s mood without feeling like a museum piece.

The 34mm by 34mm case is made from polished ethical 18k yellow gold, with a smooth cushion profile and rounded edges.
Compared with the period pieces, the proportions have been refined.
The bezel is slimmer, the lugs are shorter and more ergonomic, and the fluted crown is larger for easier winding and time-setting.

An onyx cabochon in the crown mirrors the dial, a small detail that keeps the design visually tight.
The black onyx surface does much of the heavy lifting, giving the 21 free-floating diamonds a deep, tuxedo-like backdrop.
Together, the diamonds weigh 1.05 carats and are suspended between two sapphire crystals, with a golden circular frame marking the centre of the dial.

Gilded dauphine hands keep the time display restrained, which is the right decision on a watch where the diamonds are already in motion.
A compact calibre for a moving display
The mechanical 34mm model uses Chopard’s in-house 10.01-C manual-winding movement.
Introduced in 2024, the calibre measures just 15.7mm across and 2.9mm thick, making it well suited to a design that needs room for the floating diamond construction above the dial.

The movement runs at 21,600 vibrations per hour and offers a 45-hour power reserve.
A sapphire porthole on the caseback reveals part of the calibre, while the watch remains compact at 8.53mm thick.
It’s paired with a black alligator leather strap and an ethical 18k yellow gold pin buckle.

The smaller quartz companion
Chopard is also offering a 24mm by 24mm Happy Diamonds Heritage model.
That version carries 9 Happy Diamonds and uses a quartz movement, positioning it as a smaller and more jewellery-led companion within the same anniversary family.
The 24mm edition is priced at EUR 22,800.

Both watches join the wider Happy Diamonds watch collection, rather than appearing as a detached commemorative exercise.
