Few jewellery watches have a signature as instantly recognisable as Chopard’s moving diamonds.
For the 50th anniversary of Happy Diamonds, the maison has returned to the compact cushion shape, black onyx dial and liberated gem-setting idea that made the 1976 watch such a charming break from convention.
The new Happy Diamonds Heritage arrives in two sizes, led by a 34mm hand-wound model in 18K ethical yellow gold.

At a glance
- Chopard celebrates 50 years of Happy Diamonds with new Heritage watches inspired by the 1976 design.

A 1976 idea with unusual staying power
Happy Diamonds began with a simple but radical thought, that diamonds might be more expressive if they weren’t fixed in place.
Chopard designer Ronald Kurowski developed the concept after seeing sunlight flicker across a waterfall in Germany’s Black Forest, translating that fleeting movement into diamonds that could spin and glide with the wearer’s wrist.
Rather than securing the stones with traditional prongs, each brilliant-cut diamond was placed in a gold bezel with a curved bevelled base.

The construction allowed the diamonds to move between two sapphire crystals without scratching the dial beneath.
That first Happy Diamonds watch arrived in a cushion-shaped white-gold case with black onyx framing the central time display, and it was powered by a manually wound ETA 2442 movement.
It also won the Golden Rose of Baden-Baden in 1976, helping turn an experimental idea into one of Chopard’s most durable signatures.

The Heritage model returns to onyx and yellow gold
The new Happy Diamonds Heritage is not a loose tribute.
It brings back the 34mm proportions of the 1976 watch, but shifts the case into 18K ethical yellow gold and gives the black onyx dial a full, polished presence.
The result is more graphic than delicate, with the warmth of the gold sharpening the contrast against the deep black surface.

Around the dial, 21 brilliant-cut white diamonds totalling 1.05 carats move freely, each held in its own gold bezel.
It’s a small mechanical theatre, but one that avoids feeling ornamental for the sake of it.
The diamonds don’t simply decorate the dial, they give the watch its rhythm.

Manual winding gives the 34mm watch a finer character
The most meaningful update sits inside the 34mm model.
Chopard has replaced the vintage-era ETA architecture with its in-house Calibre 10.01-C, a manually wound movement first introduced in the L’Heure du Diamant watches in 2024.
At 15.7mm across and 2.9mm thick, it is one of the smallest and thinnest calibres in Chopard’s current movement repertoire.

That helps keep the Heritage case slender at 8.53mm thick, while still delivering a 45-hour power reserve.
A small porthole on the caseback offers a view of the movement’s Côtes de Genève decoration across nickel-silver bridges.
The aperture also mirrors the central time display on the dial side, which gives the watch a pleasing sense of symmetry.

A smaller quartz companion
Chopard is also releasing a 24mm Happy Diamonds Heritage in the same broader design language.
This version measures 6.72mm thick, uses an 18K ethical yellow gold case, and carries nine white diamonds across the black onyx dial.
It is powered by a quartz movement, making it the simpler and more jewellery-led option of the pair.

Both watches are fitted to black alligator leather straps with 18K ethical yellow gold pin buckles.
Both are also water resistant to 30 metres, which is typical for this kind of precious, dress-oriented watch.

The Happy Diamonds Heritage works because it doesn’t try to modernise the idea out of recognition.

It lets Chopard’s most playful watchmaking gesture remain the main event, while the yellow gold, black onyx and manufacture movement give the 34mm edition a more collector-minded edge.
