Breguet Refines the Marine 5517 and 5527 With More Elegant Dials

Breguet’s Marine line has always occupied a slightly unusual place in the manufacture’s catalogue.

It’s the sportier, sea-minded counterpoint to the brand’s more formal watchmaking language, yet it still carries a direct link to Abraham-Louis Breguet’s appointment as Watchmaker to the French Royal Navy.

For its latest update, Breguet hasn’t rebuilt the Marine 5517 and Marine Chronograph 5527 from the case up, but it has given both watches the part that matters most on the wrist: a more refined dial.

A calmer take on Breguet’s nautical watch

The current Marine design language arrived in stages from 2017, bringing a muscular case, fluted caseband, wave-shaped crown guards and a distinctive central lug construction.

That architecture remains in place here, which is sensible because the Marine’s case has never lacked personality.

The earlier dial treatment, however, carried a busier character, with bold luminous Roman numerals and a strong flag-inspired theme that could feel heavy beside Breguet’s usual restraint.

This update softens that impression without stripping the watches of their maritime identity.

The new dial centres use the “Quai de l’Horloge” hand-guilloché motif, first seen in connection with Breguet’s 250th anniversary, beneath coloured semi-transparent lacquer.

It gives the dials more depth and more delicacy, particularly on the titanium version, where the dark blue finish is paired with rose gold accents and a smoked effect.

The switch from applied luminous Roman numerals to applied 18k gold Breguet numerals is the most important aesthetic move.

It makes the Marine feel more closely tied to the house’s classical codes, while still leaving the watch firmly in contemporary sports-watch territory.

The Marine 5517 gets the strongest visual lift

The time-and-date Marine 5517 keeps its 40mm case, with a thickness of 11.5mm and a 47.7mm lug-to-lug measurement.

It’s offered in titanium, 18k white gold and 18k rose gold, all with a screw-down crown, sapphire crystals and 100 metres of water resistance.

The new colourways are more considered than before.

Titanium receives a dark blue dial with rose gold accents, white gold gets an ice blue dial with dark blue-treated accents, and rose gold is matched with a black dial and gold accents.

Breguet has also repositioned the date to 6 o’clock, giving the dial a more balanced layout than the previous generation.

The hands remain gold and follow the Marine’s established interpretation of Breguet’s traditional hand shape, while the minute track and luminous hands preserve some practical nighttime readability.

Inside, the Marine 5517 continues with the automatic Calibre 777A.

The movement uses an inverted in-line lever escapement, a silicon balance spring, a 4Hz frequency and a 55-hour power reserve.

Visible decoration keeps the nautical theme alive, including bridges finished with broad engine-turned stripes reminiscent of ship decking and a rotor inspired by a rudder.

The Marine Chronograph 5527 follows the same course

The Marine Chronograph 5527 receives the same broader design evolution, bringing the chronograph model into line with the cleaner, more elegant character of the updated 5517.

Its case remains 42.3mm in diameter, 13.9mm thick and 50.7mm lug-to-lug, with titanium, 18k rose gold and 18k white gold options.

As with the three-hand model, water resistance is rated to 100 metres and sapphire crystals are fitted front and back.

The movement is Breguet’s automatic Calibre 582QA, a cam-operated flyback chronograph calibre with a silicon hairspring, 4Hz frequency and a 48-hour power reserve.

The flyback function suits the Marine’s instrument-watch side, allowing the chronograph to be reset and restarted in one action rather than stopped, reset and started separately.

That practical function sits well with the collection’s more assertive case design, while the new dial direction gives the watch a more mature visual balance.

Straps, bracelets and positioning

Each updated Marine 5517 can be ordered on a metal bracelet matching the case material or on a new rubber strap carrying a pattern that echoes the guilloché dial.

The rubber option gives the watch a sportier presence, while the bracelet leans into the substantial, integrated look created by the Marine’s central lug module.

For the Marine 5517, titanium models are priced at CHF 20,000 on rubber and CHF 22,700 on a titanium bracelet.

The gold versions are priced at CHF 37,000 on rubber and CHF 60,800 on a gold bracelet.

These are permanent-collection additions rather than limited pieces, which is fitting for a redesign that feels like a long-term correction rather than a one-off variation.

The result is a more convincing Marine, not because Breguet has made it less sporty, but because it has made the sportiness sit more comfortably with the brand’s own design vocabulary.

For collectors who liked the case and engineering of the third-generation Marine but found the earlier dials too forceful, these updated 5517 and 5527 models make a much stronger argument.
