Breguet Gives the Marine Chronographe 5527 a Cleaner Bicompax Dial

Breguet’s Marine Chronographe 5527 has always sat in an interesting place within the brand’s catalogue, combining nautical cues with a flyback chronograph and the formal finishing expected from the maison.

Its latest evolution doesn’t alter the underlying watch, but it does make a meaningful change where owners will notice it most, on the dial.

The new bicompax versions simplify the display, refine the typography and expand the Marine Chronographe 5527 family with six additional references.

A more legible Marine Chronographe

The core idea behind the new Marine Chronographe 5527 is restraint rather than reinvention.

Breguet has kept the case architecture and movement intact, while replacing the earlier tricompax display with a cleaner two-register layout.

The previous 12-hour counter has been removed, leaving small seconds at 9 o’clock and a 30-minute chronograph counter at 3 o’clock.

That change gives the dial more breathing room, helped further by the date window moving from between 4 and 5 o’clock to a more balanced position at 6 o’clock.

The result is a chronograph that feels easier to parse at a glance, which matters on a watch with this much dial decoration.

Breguet has also moved away from the oversized Roman numerals used on earlier versions, replacing them with horizontal Breguet Arabic numerals set on a brushed outer ring.

At the centre is the hand-made Quai de l’Horloge guilloché pattern, an interwoven diamond motif that adds depth without making the display feel crowded.

Rose gold, blue guilloché and maritime details

The reference 5527BR/Y9/5WV pairs an 18k rose gold case with a rich blue dial and blue rubber strap.

It’s a familiar Breguet colour and metal combination, but the revised dial layout gives it a sharper, more contemporary character.

The hour and minute hands are a lume-filled take on traditional Breguet hands, complete with the circular detail near the tip.

The central chronograph seconds hand carries one of the model’s more subtle nautical references, with a counterweight shaped like the letter B from the maritime signal flag alphabet.

The case remains 42.3mm across and 13.9mm thick, so this is still a substantial watch rather than a discreet dress chronograph.

Short, integrated-looking lugs help the strap turn down quickly around the wrist, softening the impression of its 50.7mm lug-to-lug length.

In rose gold it has real presence, both visually and physically, while the titanium edition will naturally appeal to anyone who wants the same design language in a lighter package.

The same calibre 582QA flyback chronograph

Inside the bicompax Marine Chronographe 5527 is Breguet’s calibre 582QA, the same flyback chronograph movement used in the earlier tricompax models.

It runs at 28,800 vibrations per hour, or 4 Hz, and offers a 48-hour power reserve.

The flyback function allows the chronograph to be stopped, reset and restarted with a single press, making it useful for timing consecutive intervals.

That fits the Marine collection’s navigational character without leaning too heavily on decorative nautical references.

The movement is visible through the exhibition caseback, giving the watch a second point of interest beyond the newly reorganised dial.

The new bicompax Marine Chronographe 5527 in rose gold on a blue rubber strap is priced at £45,700, rising to £72,100 on a full rose gold bracelet.

The titanium model on a rubber strap is the entry point for the new bicompax line at £25,400.

For collectors who liked the Marine Chronographe’s case, movement and aquatic personality but found the previous dial too busy, this is the more convincing version.

It keeps the substance of the 5527 intact while giving the watch a better sense of balance, which is exactly the kind of update a long-running chronograph often needs.
