BMW M has reached a symbolic moment in Munich, and it used the occasion to look firmly ahead.
As the brand celebrated the production of its one-millionth M car, BMW also offered an early glimpse at the first fully electric M3, a car that will carry one of its most important performance badges into a new era.
The milestone car itself was a BMW M3 finished in BMW Individual Fire Orange III, but the larger story is what comes next at the Munich plant.

At a glance
- BMW has teased the production version of the first all-electric M3 during celebrations for the one-millionth BMW M car built.
- The electric M3 will use Neue Klasse design cues and is expected to feature an 800V electrical architecture with a quad-motor layout.
- Production will take place at BMW’s Munich plant, which is being extensively transformed for the brand’s electric future.
Munich becomes the stage for BMW M’s electric shift
The Munich plant has long been central to BMW’s identity, and its role is now expanding beyond traditional performance production.
The factory is undergoing a major transformation as BMW prepares it for a new generation of electric models, including the upcoming electric M3.
That detail matters because the M3 is not just another nameplate in the BMW catalogue.

For decades, it has been the compact executive performance car against which rivals are measured, and moving it into an electric format is one of the most consequential decisions BMW M has made.
Neue Klasse design with M-specific aggression
The teaser images point to a car shaped by BMW’s Neue Klasse design language, rather than a simple electric reworking of the current M3.
Key visual elements include a slim interpretation of the kidney grille, integrated LED headlights and claw-shaped daytime running lights.

BMW is also giving the car its own M-specific treatment, with unique bumpers, bonnet detailing, mirrors and wheels expected to separate it from regular Neue Klasse models.
The result should be cleaner and more technical than the current combustion M3, but still assertive enough to carry the badge without looking anonymous.
A quad-motor M3 with 800V foundations
The most striking technical detail is the planned 800V electric architecture, a layout associated with faster charging capability and high-performance EV engineering.

The electric M3 is also set to use a quad-motor configuration, giving BMW M the ability to manage torque at each wheel with far greater precision than a conventional drivetrain.
BMW has linked the system to a potential output of 1,341 hp, though the production version is expected to be limited to a lower figure.
Even with a reduced output, the move to four electric motors suggests the next M3 will be as much about control and response as headline acceleration.

The challenge for BMW M will be translating the M3’s familiar sharpness into a car without a combustion engine, gearbox or exhaust note.
If the engineering delivers the immediacy and balance implied by the quad-motor layout, the first electric M3 could become a defining model for the next chapter of the M brand.
