Blancpain Brings the Fifty Fathoms Tech Into the Main Line

Blancpain’s most technical Fifty Fathoms is no longer a specialist outlier.

The new Fifty Fathoms Tech Ref. 5019A takes the extended dive-time concept first seen on the Gombessa model and folds it into the permanent collection, aimed at serious underwater users as much as collectors drawn to its uncompromising instrument-watch character.

Its defining feature remains the patented three-hour timing system, a thoughtful response to the longer underwater sessions made possible by modern rebreather diving.

The Fifty Fathoms has always been tied to the evolution of underwater timing, but the Tech line addresses a different kind of dive profile.

Traditional dive bezels are built around a 60-minute scale, which made sense for much of recreational and professional diving history.

Closed-circuit rebreather systems have changed that rhythm, allowing divers, photographers and scientific teams to remain below the surface for several hours.

Blancpain’s answer is a dedicated central hand that makes one full rotation every three hours, paired with a unidirectional bezel graduated for the same extended timing format.

The result is deliberately familiar in use, even if the underlying system is more specialised than a conventional dive watch.

Grade 23 titanium and an ultra-dark dial

The Ref. 5019A retains the large 47mm case and central-lug architecture associated with the Fifty Fathoms Tech Gombessa.

It’s made from satin-finished Grade 23 titanium, giving the watch a professional tool-watch presence while keeping weight in check for its size.

The case measures 14.81mm thick, is rated to 300 metres and includes a helium escape valve for saturation diving environments.

The dial uses Blancpain’s Absolute Black treatment, which is designed to absorb up to 97 percent of incoming light.

That near-reflection-free surface matters underwater, where glare and murky visibility can make even large displays harder to read.

Blancpain separates the indications with two lume colours.

Blue-emission Super-LumiNova is used for the diving functions, including the three-hour hand and bezel scale, while green-emission Super-LumiNova marks the standard time display and the block-style applied indices.

The calibre 13P5A adds everyday usefulness

Inside is Blancpain’s manufacture calibre 13P5A, an automatic movement developed from the brand’s calibre 1315 architecture.

It runs at 28,800 vibrations per hour, uses 35 jewels and delivers a 120-hour power reserve from a triple-barrel construction.

The practical change on this version is the addition of a date display, which gives the Fifty Fathoms Tech a more daily-wearable edge without softening its technical purpose.

The watch also introduces a tool-free interchangeable strap system through its central lugs.

It’s delivered on an orange rubber strap with a pin buckle, while black and white rubber straps are offered separately.
