Baltic’s Hermétique has always made sense as a watch for people who actually use their gear, not just admire it in a tray.
The new Hermétique The Rift sharpens that idea with a limited edition tied to Iceland’s demanding gravel event, where riders cross volcanic terrain near the meeting point of the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates.
It also brings something especially welcome to the line, with a new 34mm case joining the familiar 37mm format.

At a glance
- Baltic has released the Hermétique The Rift as a limited edition marking its role as Official Timekeeper of The Rift in Iceland.
- The watch comes in 34mm and 37mm stainless steel cases with 150m water resistance, a luminous dial and a Miyota 9039 automatic movement.
- Production is limited to 400 pieces, priced at EUR 620 excluding taxes or EUR 744 including VAT.
A field watch shaped by Icelandic riding terrain
The Rift is not a polite backdrop for a commemorative watch.
The event brings nearly 900 cyclists onto the trails of southern Iceland, where black volcanic ground, mossy greens and glacial blue tones define the scenery as much as the weather defines the effort.
Baltic has translated that landscape into a Hermétique that feels more grounded than decorative.

The case is fully brushed 316L stainless steel, with only the polished bezel adding a small flash of contrast.
That restrained finish suits the Hermétique’s purpose, which sits somewhere between modern field watch, compact sport watch and everyday automatic.
The integrated crown remains one of the model’s most practical details, keeping the silhouette tidy and making the watch comfortable whether worn on the left or right wrist.

The importance of the new 34mm size
The headline detail for many collectors won’t be the colour palette, but the sizing.
Alongside the existing 37mm Hermétique case, Baltic is introducing a 34mm version for The Rift edition.
That smaller case measures 42.5mm lug-to-lug, while the 37mm version measures 46mm across the wrist.

Both are 10.8mm thick including the double-domed sapphire crystal, or 8.3mm without it, so the watch should retain the slim, low-profile feeling that has helped make the Hermétique so wearable.
The move to 34mm is especially interesting because it doesn’t read as a token downsizing exercise.
Baltic has adjusted the strap proportions too, using an 18mm lug width on the 34mm case and 20mm on the 37mm model.

That matters on a compact watch, where the wrong strap width can quickly make a case feel visually off balance.
A luminous dial with volcanic contrast
The Hermétique The Rift keeps the series’ emphasis on visibility, but its dial treatment gives the model a stronger identity.
The central section is fully luminous in matte white, bordered by two polished steel blades and framed by a forged-carbon railway track.

It’s an unusual mix of textures for a watch at this price, and it works because the composition remains clean.
Super-LumiNova BGW9 and C3 are used across the dial, with applied 0.5mm-thick luminous numerals at the cardinal positions and additional luminous dots around the minute track.
Some markers overlap the dial sections, a detail carried through from other Hermétique references and one that gives the watch more depth than a flat field layout.

The polished steel syringe hands are filled with BGW9, while the lollipop seconds hand also receives a touch of lume.
The result is a watch that leans into utility without looking anonymous.
The Miyota 9039 keeps the profile honest
Inside the Hermétique The Rift is the Miyota 9039, an automatic movement that has become a familiar choice for independent brands building slim, approachable mechanical watches.

It runs at 28,800 vibrations per hour, offers 42 hours of power reserve and includes hacking seconds for more precise time setting.
It’s also a true no-date movement, which keeps the dial free of an unnecessary date window.
For a watch with this kind of pared-back, terrain-led identity, that decision feels right.

The 150m water resistance rating and vulcanised FKM rubber sport strap also make the watch more than a themed release.
It should handle rain, sweat, travel and regular outdoor use without asking the owner to treat it delicately.

The Hermétique The Rift is a smart fit for Baltic because it doesn’t force the connection between watch and event.

It takes the Hermétique’s existing strengths, adds a landscape-driven dial and makes the collection more inclusive with a properly considered smaller case.
