Awake Gives the Frosted Leaf Royal Blue a Pure Gold Dial and Slimmer Case

Awake’s Frosted Leaf line has always lived or died by the dial, and the new Royal Blue leans fully into that strength.

For the first time, the French independent has combined Vietnamese sơn mài lacquer with pure gold leaf, replacing the silver leaf used on earlier Frosted Leaf models.

The result is a compact, dial-led dress watch with warmer visual depth, a newly refined case and a production run tight enough to keep it firmly in enthusiast territory.

The Royal Blue is built around a dial technique that gives the watch its character before the movement, case or strap enter the conversation.

Each dial is made from alternating layers of natural lacquer, blue pigment and pure gold leaf, with the lacquer drawn from the sap of the cây sơn tree.

The blue tones range from deep sapphire to lighter sky-like shades, so the gold doesn’t simply sit on a flat background.

It appears caught inside the surface, scattered through the lacquer with a softer warmth than the cooler silver-leaf versions of the Frosted Leaf.

The finishing process is slow and unforgiving.

An artisan finger-sands the dial for roughly 15 hours, and at that stage a single mistake can spoil the entire piece.

That risk is part of the appeal, because the dial isn’t trying to look perfectly mechanical or repeatable.

No two Royal Blue dials will be identical, which suits a watch whose main attraction is the texture, irregularity and hand-worked depth of its surface.

A smaller case for a dial-first watch

Royal Blue also introduces a new case profile for the Frosted Leaf family.

The stainless steel case is now 38mm across, down from the earlier 39mm format, with a 44.75mm lug-to-lug measurement and an 11.5mm thickness.

That sounds like a modest change on paper, but it matters for a watch of this kind.

The Frosted Leaf is essentially a dress-leaning piece built around an expressive dial, and the smaller proportions should help it sit more naturally on a wider range of wrists.

Awake hasn’t made the watch delicate in the practical sense, though.

The crown is now screw-down, helping the Royal Blue reach 100m of water resistance, which is notably robust for a watch with such a formal visual language.

A gently domed sapphire crystal sits over the dial, while the crown carries the brand’s updated emblem.

The dial also uses Awake’s newer handwritten-style logo, part of a broader identity refresh that gives the watch a less rigid, more personal feel.

The G101 movement and Jean Rousseau strap

Inside the Frosted Leaf Royal Blue is the La Joux-Perret G101 automatic calibre.

It runs at 28,800 vibrations per hour and offers a 68-hour power reserve, which gives the watch enough autonomy to be set down for a weekend and picked up again without much fuss.

The movement is visible through a sapphire caseback, where Awake has fitted a new tungsten rotor finished in three ways.

It’s a sensible choice for a watch at this level, giving the Royal Blue a modern automatic engine without distracting from the craft story on the front.

The strap is blue Alcantara by Jean Rousseau, chosen to keep the watch soft and tonal rather than sharply formal.

Awake also pairs it with a new micro-adjustable pin buckle, allowing the wearer to adjust the fit in 3mm increments.

That small usability detail is easy to overlook, but it’s precisely the sort of thing that makes a slim, daily-wearable watch more satisfying over time.

At €3,000, the Royal Blue sits above the silver-leaf Frosted Leaf, but the move to pure gold leaf and the more refined 38mm case give that increase a clear rationale.
