Atelier Wen has always occupied a distinctive place in contemporary watchmaking, less interested in easy national labels than in what happens when craft cultures meet on equal footing.
The Perception V3 is the brand’s most complete expression of that idea so far, bringing a French independent calibre into conversation with Chinese guilloché, architectural casework and decorative motifs.
It’s a watch about identity, but not in the shallow sense of flag-waving design cues.

A French calibre with a Chinese night sky
The most significant change sits behind the exhibition caseback.
Perception V3 uses Pequignet’s EPM03, a French independent movement that places the collection on new technical ground while keeping Atelier Wen’s Franco-Chinese character intact.
Pequignet remains one of France’s rare independent movement manufactures, which gives the choice more weight than a simple outsourcing decision.
Here, the calibre has been customised with bridges shaped around the traditional Chinese representation of wind.
Across three-quarters of those bridges, Atelier Wen applies mirror-polished blue aventurine lacquer, an unusual and demanding decorative treatment in watchmaking.
The effect is deliberately atmospheric, giving the movement the impression of a deep night sky rather than a conventional machine finish.
The EPM03 brings practical gains too, including chronometer-grade precision rated at -4/+6 seconds per day, with an average within ±2 seconds per day.
It also offers a 65-hour power reserve and introduces hacking seconds to the Perception line, allowing the wearer to stop the seconds hand for exact time-setting.
Hand-guilloché from Henan
If the movement gives the V3 its French mechanical anchor, the dial is where the Chinese craft story comes fully into view.
Every Perception dial is hand-turned by the workshop of Cheng Yucai in Henan, recognised as China’s first master guillocheur.
Cheng is a self-taught artisan who built his own rose engines after taking on a craft that had no established local tradition in China.
For the V3, each dial carries Atelier Wen’s familiar écailles de poisson pattern, a fish-scale guilloché cut on a hand-operated rose engine.
It’s the sort of detail that rewards movement on the wrist, catching light differently as the dial turns rather than relying on flat colour alone.
The collection now includes three dial executions.
缥 Piāo returns in ice blue, 霞 Xiá keeps its warm salmon guilloché, and the new 筠 Yún introduces a bamboo-green tone inspired by the smooth skin of bamboo.
Yún is also treated differently on the case and bracelet, using micro-frosted finishing instead of the brushed surfaces found on the other variants.
That softer surface diffuses light more gently and makes the mirror-polished bevels read with stronger contrast.
The Perception case keeps its architectural cues
The wider design remains unmistakably Perception.
The case silhouette draws from traditional Chinese architecture, with curved flanks that echo pagoda rooflines and sharper angles that recall roof structures.
It’s a more thoughtful route than simply placing a motif on the dial, because the cultural references are worked into the shape of the watch itself.
The case is made from 904L stainless steel and measures 40mm at its widest point.
At 10.4mm thick with 100 metres of water resistance, the V3 keeps the everyday-wear profile that helped define the collection.
Founder Robin Tallendier has described Atelier Wen as Franco-Chinese from its first day, with the aim of building watches rooted in Chinese culture while remaining open to the best technical partners for each project.
That position feels especially clear here, because neither half of the watch is treated as decoration for the other.

The Perception V3 works because it doesn’t ask Chinese craft to imitate Swiss tradition or French engineering to legitimise the rest of the watch.
Instead, Atelier Wen gives each element space to speak, and the result is a more mature expression of what modern cross-cultural watchmaking can look like.
