Minute repeaters usually sit behind six-figure pricing and very small production numbers, which is why Atelier Mephalie’s debut lands with unusual force.
The revived Chinese name has introduced a three-watch collection built around a hand-wound minute repeater calibre made in its own workshop, with prices that begin at USD 25,000 excluding VAT.
It’s a bold opening move for a brand tying itself to a Chinese horological name founded in 1876, and it raises a more interesting question than price alone: can the most old-world of complications be produced with a more repeatable modern approach?

At a glance
- Atelier Mephalie has launched a three-model Minute Repeater Collection based on its hand-wound CAL.M 37-689R movement.
- The brand claims the calibre was developed over five years for repeatable production, with annual capacity of more than 200 movements.
- Prices start at USD 25,000 excluding VAT, with 218 watches planned across the inaugural series.
A Chinese minute repeater with disruptive pricing
The minute repeater remains one of the defining complications of classical watchmaking because it doesn’t just measure time, it performs it.
On demand, the mechanism chimes the hours, quarters and minutes through hammers striking tuned gongs, turning a mechanical reading of the dial into sound.
That complexity explains why contemporary European minute repeaters are rarely seen below the upper end of five figures, and more often occupy six-figure territory.

Atelier Mephalie is entering the category from a different angle, with a stated aim of making the calibre repeatable rather than treating it as a one-off artisanal exercise.
The name itself has historical weight in China.
Mephalie was founded in 1876 by Sun Tingyuan, and in 1915 his son Sun Meitang opened a clock factory in Shanghai that combined mechanised production with Chinese decorative craft traditions.

The factory was destroyed in 1932, after which the name disappeared for decades.
Its revival is led by Lin Xiaolin, who entered the watch industry in 2011 and is also associated with Lucky Harvey.
For its first collection, Atelier Mephalie has chosen not an accessible three-hander or a tourbillon, but a chiming watch with a complication still considered difficult to build, regulate and tune.

The CAL.M 37-689R movement
All three watches use the CAL.M 37-689R, a hand-wound minute repeater calibre measuring 37mm wide and 6.89mm thick.
The movement has 39 jewels, beats at 28,800 vibrations per hour and offers a stated 45-hour power reserve.
Its repeater is activated by a slide on the case band, with two hammers chiming the hours, quarters and minutes on conventional gongs.

A flying governor regulates the tempo of the chiming sequence.
Atelier Mephalie says the calibre went through five years of acoustic, mechanical and production testing before reaching the version used in these watches.
The brand also claims the 218-watch opening series accounts for its full annual production capacity, with more than 200 movements possible per year.

That number is striking in a segment where minute repeaters are typically associated with very limited output and extensive individual adjustment.
The finishing, from the details available, appears more pragmatic than traditional Swiss high-complication finishing.
The movement uses polished hammers, but the bridges are not described as hand-chamfered, and the stated accuracy of -10 to +25 seconds per day is modest by contemporary high-end expectations.

Three executions, from automata to cloisonné
The collection shares one basic case architecture across the three models.
Each watch measures 42mm in diameter, with thickness ranging from 11.6mm to 12mm depending on the version, and roughly 50mm in length.
The cases use sapphire crystals front and back, with steel or rose gold depending on the model.

The Conductor is the most theatrical of the three.
Made in stainless steel, it adds an automaton to the chiming mechanism, with hand-finished silver musicians and a conductor whose arms move when the repeater is activated.
The dial combines a black polished lower section with a deep blue guilloché plate hand-turned by Chinese craftsman Cheng Yucai.

The Conductor is limited to 99 pieces and priced at USD 25,000 excluding VAT.
The Galloping Horse is also cased in stainless steel, but turns the focus toward Chinese decorative craft.
Its dial is made by Xiong Songtao, described as a third-generation heir to the Xiong family enamel workshop, a nationally recognised China Arts and Crafts Master and a representative inheritor of Jingtailan cloisonné.

The standard motif depicts a horse head with a flowing mane, outlined in thin gold wires and filled with amber and chestnut enamel tones over a black enamel ground.
Collectors can commission other motifs at additional cost.
The Galloping Horse is limited to 99 pieces and priced at USD 28,000 excluding VAT.

The Voice of China is the smallest series and the only full-gold model.
Its 18K rose-gold dial is hand-carved in relief with No. 12 on the Bund, while the case, handset and pin buckle are also made in 18K rose gold.
An 18K yellow-gold plaque appears on the movement side.

The Voice of China is limited to 20 pieces and priced at USD 59,500 excluding VAT.

Atelier Mephalie’s first collection won’t be judged only by how low it can price a repeater, but by how convincingly it can deliver sound, reliability and craft at that level.
Still, as an opening statement, it puts Chinese high-complication watchmaking in a category that collectors can no longer dismiss as peripheral.
