Union Glashütte Gives the Averin Chronograph a Sachsen Classic Racing Dial

Union Glashütte has turned its Sachsen Classic watch into something sharper for 2026.

After several rally-themed editions built around the round Noramis Chronograph, the German manufacture has moved to the square-cased Averin Chronograph for the 23rd Sachsen Classic historic rally, scheduled for 14 and 15 August 2026.

The result feels like a better mechanical fit for classic motorsport, with a dashboard-like layout, strong geometry and a colour palette drawn from 1970s and 1980s racing cars.

A square case for a historic rally

The Averin Chronograph already had the right visual language for a motorsport edition.

Its 41mm by 41mm stainless steel case is angular and assertive, with brushed and polished surfaces that bring out the architecture rather than softening it.

At 15.45mm thick and 49.47mm lug-to-lug, it’s not a shy chronograph, but that physical presence suits the dashboard-instrument mood of the design.

The domed sapphire crystal follows the square case profile, while rectangular pushers sit either side of the crown for a neatly integrated chronograph layout.

A sapphire caseback opens up the movement view, and the 100m water resistance gives the watch more daily-use credibility than many retro-flavoured chronographs.

Racing colours on a white instrument dial

The defining change for this Sachsen Classic edition is the dial.

Union Glashütte uses a white embossed tile-pattern surface, then cuts across it with signal red, Nardo grey and Daytona grey accents that nod to historic racing liveries without turning the watch into a costume piece.

The square subdials reinforce the cockpit feeling, with small seconds at 9 o’clock and a 30-minute chronograph counter at 3 o’clock.

The central chronograph seconds hand is lacquered in bright red, giving the watch a useful focal point when the timing function is running.

Nickel-plated hour and minute hands carry Super-LumiNova, as do the markers, while the date remains cleanly placed at 6 o’clock.

The UNG-27.S2 inside the case

Power comes from the calibre UNG-27.S2, Union Glashütte’s automatic chronograph movement using Valjoux 7750 architecture.

It’s a cam-operated chronograph with stop-seconds, a silicon balance spring and a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour.

The minimum 65-hour power reserve is a useful modern upgrade, especially for a watch that may rotate between weekend wear, car events and regular office days.

Two straps are included, which gives the watch two fairly distinct characters out of the box.

The bright red rubber strap leans into the motorsport theme, while the grey perforated leather strap with red lining offers the more classic driving-watch look.

Both use a quick-change system, with the rubber strap fitted to a pin buckle and the leather strap supplied with a double clasp.

The Averin Chronograph Limited Edition Sachsen Classic 2026 works because it doesn’t treat motorsport as decoration alone.

Between the square case, instrument-style layout, lively colour treatment and practical two-strap package, it’s a credible rally companion for collectors who prefer their car watches with a bit of German restraint.
