TAG Heuer Brings the Monza Back in Forged Carbon

TAG Heuer is giving the Monza a sharper, lighter and more technical return for the racing chronograph’s 50th anniversary.

The new Monza Flyback Chronograph Carbon takes one of the brand’s more cultish motorsport designs and moves it into forged carbon, while keeping the black, white and red attitude that has long defined the model.

It’s not trying to replace the Carrera or Monaco in TAG Heuer’s line-up, and that’s part of the appeal.

The Monza returns as a carbon-cased racing chronograph

The Monza has always sat slightly apart from TAG Heuer’s better-known motorsport icons.

First introduced in 1976 to celebrate Ferrari’s Formula 1 World Championship with Niki Lauda and Clay Regazzoni, it carried the timing heritage of Heuer into a darker, more assertive chronograph format.

The new model keeps the modern cushion-shaped profile that returned to the Monza line in 2000, rather than the barrel-like case of the original 1970s watch.

For this edition, TAG Heuer uses matte forged carbon for the 42mm case, fixed bezel and crown, giving the watch a distinctly contemporary character without losing the Monza’s vintage racing undertone.

The case measures 15.22mm thick and is paired with black DLC-coated steel chronograph pushers and a black DLC-coated titanium caseback.

Sapphire crystals are fitted front and back, while water resistance is rated to 100 metres, making this more than a display-case anniversary piece.

The dial keeps the Monza’s familiar motorsport palette but rearranges the functions in a cleaner modern layout.

A 30-minute chronograph counter sits at 3 o’clock, running seconds move to 6 o’clock and the framed trapezoidal date window is placed at 9 o’clock.

A sloped outer flange carries both tachymeter and pulsometer scales, a detail that gives the watch the feel of an instrument rather than a decorative chronograph.

White markings and Super-LumiNova-filled hands keep the matte black dial legible, while the red central chronograph seconds hand and red minute-counter hand bring the stopwatch functions forward visually.

It’s a small but effective choice, because the chronograph indications now read as a matched set.

The TH20-12 flyback movement is the real upgrade

Inside the Monza Flyback Chronograph Carbon is TAG Heuer’s calibre TH20-12, an in-house automatic integrated flyback chronograph.

The movement uses a column wheel and vertical clutch, both desirable features in a modern mechanical chronograph because they support smoother operation and clean engagement of the timing function.

The flyback function allows the chronograph to be reset and restarted with a single press, a natural fit for a watch tied so closely to racing timing.

The movement runs at 28,800 vibrations per hour, uses 33 jewels and offers an 80-hour power reserve, which is unusually generous for an automatic chronograph.

It is also COSC-certified, bringing chronometer credentials to a watch that could easily have leaned on design alone.

Through the sapphire caseback, the blackened openworked rotor continues the red-accent theme, while the red-finished column wheel adds a discreet mechanical flourish.
