Rolls-Royce has revealed Phantom Hummingbird, a Phantom Extended Private Commission shaped around one of nature’s most luminous creatures.
Conceived as a tribute to the client’s wife and brought to life through Private Office Dubai, the one-off motor car introduces abalone shell to Rolls-Royce marquetry for the first time.
It’s a quiet but significant moment for the marque’s Bespoke division, not because the result is loud, but because the material demanded an entirely new level of delicacy from its craftspeople.

At a glance
- Rolls-Royce Phantom Hummingbird is a one-off Phantom Extended Private Commission created through Private Office Dubai.
- It debuts abalone shell marquetry for Rolls-Royce, pairing the material with mother-of-pearl to evoke a hummingbird’s iridescent feathers.
- The commission features a Wildberry and White Sands exterior, nature-led interior detailing and three intricate marquetry panels.
Abalone shell enters the Rolls-Royce craft vocabulary
The hummingbird is an apt subject for a Rolls-Royce commission built around light, movement and close inspection.
Its colour is not simply pigment, but the result of microscopic feather structures that scatter light, creating flashes that change as the bird moves.
Rolls-Royce’s craftspeople have echoed that effect through abalone shell, a material prized for the blue-green lustre of its nacreous inner surface.
Here, abalone is combined with mother-of-pearl to form the shimmering plumage of the bird, translating a natural optical effect into the precise language of marquetry.
The exterior continues the theme with a hand-applied White Sands Coachline and a hand-painted hummingbird taking flight along the length of the car.
The marquetry demanded a new technique
The most technically compelling work sits inside the rear cabin.
Each Picnic Table carries a hummingbird formed from 53 individual pieces of abalone shell and mother-of-pearl, with 18 pieces used in the wings alone.
Between the two rear seats, the Rear Waterfall panel carries an 84-piece botanical motif, giving the cabin a more expansive sense of movement.
The development of the composition took more than nine months, partly because abalone shell is exceptionally fine and brittle.
Rolls-Royce’s Bespoke designers, engineers and craftspeople worked through six iterations before arriving at a technique that could meet both visual and durability demands.
Each fragment of abalone and mother-of-pearl is laser-cut 0.06 mm larger than its final shape to allow for the laser’s burn margin, then filed by hand until it sits flush against its neighbouring pieces.
That hand-finishing is especially important in the wings, where the seams need to disappear without flattening the life of the composition.
After cutting and fitting, the Picnic Tables and Rear Waterfall panel required 45 hours of work across the three finished panels.
A cabin palette built around iridescence
The surrounding interior is deliberately calm, allowing the shell work to hold the eye without overwhelming the cabin.
Ash Burr veneer forms the background for the three marquetry panels, giving the abalone and mother-of-pearl a warm, natural setting.
Silver Birch appears within the Picnic Table motifs and was cut from a single selected log, chosen for a grain pattern that would sit naturally within the composition.
The seats are trimmed in Creme Light leather with Moccasin and Tan detailing, while Seashell carpets and a Starlight Headliner complete the softly layered interior.
Outside, the Phantom Hummingbird wears a two-tone finish with a Wildberry lower body and White Sands upper body, a combination that gives the large Phantom Extended silhouette a more delicate visual rhythm.

Phantom Hummingbird is the kind of commission that shows where modern coachbuilt luxury is heading, with personal symbolism, material experimentation and patient handwork carrying more weight than spectacle.
For collectors who follow Rolls-Royce Bespoke, its importance lies in a small iridescent detail that may well open the door to new decorative possibilities across future private commissions.
