Rado Adds a Sparkling Gold Dial to the 39mm Captain Cook

Rado’s Captain Cook has become one of the brand’s most adaptable modern watches, and the latest 39mm version leans into a more expressive side of the collection.

The familiar dive-watch shape remains, but the new golden dial gives it a noticeably brighter, more dressed-up character without stripping away the practical specification that made the model work in the first place.

The Captain Cook name dates back to 1962, but its modern revival has become one of Rado’s most recognisable success stories since returning in 2017.

Part of that success comes from range. The collection now stretches from compact vintage-style divers to ceramic executions, skeletonised models and chronographs, yet the core design remains easy to identify.

This new version sits in the 39mm stainless steel case, a size that lands between the smaller 37mm models and the larger 43mm pieces.

At 45.5mm lug-to-lug and 12mm thick, it should wear with the approachable feel of a daily sports watch rather than the presence of a large tool diver.

The construction stays properly capable. A screw-down crown and screw-down caseback help deliver 300 metres of water resistance, so the added shimmer hasn’t come at the expense of function.

A gold dial with real movement in the light

The defining feature is the new yellow gold-coloured dial, finished through a multi-stage process that creates a sparkling, diamond-powder-like surface.

It’s the kind of texture that changes as the wrist moves, giving the otherwise familiar Captain Cook layout a more animated personality.

Rado pairs the dial with yellow gold-coloured PVD applied indexes and broad hands, all filled with white Super-LumiNova for legibility.

The brand’s signature rotating anchor sits below 12 o’clock, while the date window remains at 3 o’clock.

A yellow gold-coloured PVD-coated steel bezel frames the dial, fitted with a polished black high-tech ceramic insert and white Super-LumiNova-filled numerals and markers.

The box-shaped sapphire crystal, treated with anti-reflective coating on both sides, keeps the vintage-inspired edge distortion that has become part of the model’s appeal.

R763 movement and two-strap versatility

Inside is Rado’s automatic calibre R763, a branded execution of the ETA C07.611 platform.

It runs at 21,600 vibrations per hour and offers an 80-hour power reserve, which makes the watch easier to rotate through a collection without constant resetting.

The movement also uses a Nivachron balance spring, adding improved resistance to magnetic fields.

Rado supplies the watch with a stainless steel bracelet and an additional black textured rubber strap.

The bracelet combines brushed outer links with polished rice-grain centre links, reinforcing the vintage note while giving the watch a sharper dress-sport profile.

The EasyClip quick-release system means the owner can swap to rubber without tools, which suits a watch that moves between polished and practical moods so easily.
