Patek Philippe’s perpetual calendar chronograph has long been one of the most recognisable families in high watchmaking.
With the Ref. 5978P-010 Milano 2026, the manufacture steps away from the familiar subdial calendar layout and gives the complication a sharper, more architectural personality.
The watch is limited to 120 pieces and brings together two mechanisms that collectors already know well, though never before in this combination.

At a glance
- Patek Philippe has introduced the Ref. 5978P-010 Milano 2026, a 120-piece platinum limited edition.
- It combines an instantaneous perpetual calendar with a manually wound chronograph and an instantaneous jumping minute counter.
- The watch uses Italian day and month indications and was created for the brand’s Grand Art Exhibition in Milan.
A rare new reading of a Patek Philippe signature
The Ref. 5978P-010 matters because it changes the visual language of one of Patek Philippe’s most important complications.
Rather than arranging the calendar through traditional subdials, the watch uses aperture displays in an arc across the upper half of the dial.
That gives the dial a more modern rhythm while preserving the classic pairing of a chronograph with a perpetual calendar.

The base is the manually wound CH 29-535 PS chronograph calibre, a movement family introduced in 2009.
Its partner here is Patek Philippe’s instantaneous perpetual calendar module, a mechanism that first appeared in 2008 and has previously been reserved for some of the manufacture’s most complex chiming watches.
Bringing the two together creates a watch that feels intellectually satisfying rather than merely decorative.

Platinum case and a dial made for Milan
The case is platinum and measures 42mm across, with a thickness of 14.45mm.
Those proportions make it larger and thicker than the Ref. 5270, which is listed at 41mm by 12.4mm, but the added height reflects the architecture of the disc-based perpetual calendar.
The concave bezel recalls the Quadruple Complication Ref. 5308, while the lug flanks curve inward to soften the profile.

The dial is navy blue with a sunburst finish that darkens toward the perimeter.
A recessed, textured centre adds depth, while snailed counters at 3 and 9 o’clock give the chronograph registers a more traditional finish.
Red chronograph seconds and minute hands separate elapsed time from civil time and calendar information at a glance.

The calendar indications include day and month windows in Italian, a moonphase at 6 o’clock, a day/night aperture at 8 o’clock and a leap-year aperture at 4 o’clock.
The appeal of an instantaneous calendar
Most perpetual calendars change gradually around midnight, with discs or hands moving over a period of several hours.
The Ref. 5978P-010 is different because its disc-based calendar indications jump instantaneously.

That is not simply a theatrical detail.
Moving large calendar discs at once requires careful control of energy, especially at the end of February when the date has to advance several positions in a single operation.
Patek Philippe’s solution uses a grand lever architecture with a month cam and a satellite leap-year cam.

The mechanism varies how long it charges the return spring depending on the length of the month.
In a 31-day month, the work is relatively brief because the date advances by one position.
In February, the system begins loading the spring earlier, spreading the work over a longer period before the midnight jump.

The result is a more efficient instantaneous changeover and a reduced disturbance to the movement during the most demanding calendar transitions.
For collectors, this is the kind of engineering that rewards close study rather than a quick glance.

The Ref. 5978P-010 is not a conservative addition to Patek Philippe’s perpetual calendar chronograph line, and that’s exactly its interest.

It keeps the lineage intact mechanically, then shifts the display into a more contemporary register, making this Milan edition one of the more compelling recent expressions of the manufacture’s complicated watchmaking.
