Panerai’s Luminor Marina PAM01707 Puts Carbotech on a Classic 44mm Case

Panerai’s Luminor has always been a watch of strong shapes rather than delicate gestures.

With the new Luminor Marina PAM01707, the familiar 44mm form is pushed into lighter, more technical territory through a full Carbotech case, while the dial leans back toward the cleaner look of the brand’s early military watches.

It’s still unmistakably a Luminor, but the material shift changes how this large watch should feel on the wrist.

The headline here is Carbotech, Panerai’s proprietary carbon composite formed by compressing layers of carbon fibre with PEEK, a high-performance polymer.

That construction gives the case its distinctive marbled surface, meaning each watch carries a slightly different pattern across its matte-black exterior.

For a 44mm Luminor Marina, weight matters.

The PAM01707 comes in at around 100 grams, helped by the lightness of Carbotech and the use of DLC-coated titanium for the closed screw-down caseback and trapezoidal pin buckle.

The material choice also suits the watch’s functional brief, with strong corrosion resistance and a 300-metre water-resistance rating.

Panerai keeps the architecture familiar, including the broad cushion case, signature crown-protecting bridge and imposing bezel, but the darker carbon composite makes the watch feel more contemporary than a steel Luminor of the same size.

The matte black dial uses Panerai’s classic sandwich construction, with beige Super-LumiNova set beneath the upper dial layer for a warm, aged tone by day and a green glow in darkness.

The small seconds display at 9 o’clock is more than a visual signature.

It also nods to the practical logic of early military dive watches, where a running seconds hand allowed the wearer to confirm the movement was operating at a glance.

Inside is the automatic Panerai calibre P.9010, produced at ValFleurier and built with twin barrels for a three-day power reserve.

The movement runs at 28,800 vibrations per hour and uses 31 jewels.

Its most useful everyday feature is an independently adjustable local hour hand, which can be moved in one-hour increments without stopping the movement.

That makes the PAM01707 more convenient for travel than its military-inspired looks might suggest.

The watch is delivered on a brown vintage-style calf leather strap with beige stitching, while a black rubber strap is also included for water use or a more technical appearance.
