Panerai has never been shy about building oversized dive watches with a military edge, but the Submersible Navy SEALs Afniotech Experience PAM01089 pushes that formula into less familiar territory.
Presented at Watches and Wonders Geneva 2026, the 47 mm limited edition introduces Afniotech, a proprietary case material composed of more than 95 per cent hafnium.
It’s a serious technical flex, matched with 1,000 metre water resistance, a GMT movement and access to a three-day Panerai Experience Programme in Florida.

Afniotech gives Panerai a new material story
Afniotech is the headline here, and not just because it’s new to watchmaking.
The material is built around hafnium, a metal more commonly associated with specialist industrial fields such as nuclear energy, aerospace and advanced engineering.
Panerai describes the alloy as highly resistant to corrosion and stable in demanding environments, qualities that make sense for a brand still closely tied to professional diving instruments.
There’s a physical consequence too.
Hafnium is around 70 per cent heavier than stainless steel while offering comparable hardness, so this won’t be a featherweight Submersible trying to disappear on the wrist.
The challenge was getting it into watch form at all.
Hafnium is rare, found only in small quantities alongside zirconium ores, and its machining requirements led Panerai to adapt manufacturing processes and component geometry for the PAM01089.
The finished case has a silver-grey tone with faint bluish notes, helped by a sandblasted surface that keeps reflections down and gives the watch a purposeful, equipment-like presence.
A 1,000 metre Submersible with Navy SEALs detailing
The PAM01089 is built around a 47 mm case, the size Panerai often reserves for its most assertive professional pieces.
Afniotech is used not only for the case, but also for the unidirectional rotating bezel and the crown-protecting bridge.
That bridge carries the familiar locking lever, here engraved with “1000m” as a direct reminder of the watch’s 100 bar water-resistance rating.
To reach that depth rating, Panerai uses an oversized sapphire crystal, a reinforced caseback and case architecture designed to cope with pressure far beyond recreational diving limits.
The bezel is designed for use rather than decoration.
Its laser-engraved scale includes a dedicated 15-minute section for timing underwater intervals, while a luminous triangle at 12 o’clock helps with fast orientation in low visibility.
Deep square teeth around the bezel edge are intended to make it easier to grip, including when the wearer is using gloves.
The anthracite dial keeps the military theme disciplined rather than theatrical.
It has a shaded finish, a date at 3 o’clock, a small seconds display at 9 o’clock inspired by a target sight, and a detailed minute track on the rehaut.
Green Super-LumiNova X2 is used for strong low-light visibility, with a useful colour split between indications.
The minute hand and bezel markers glow blue, while the remaining dial elements glow green, allowing the most important dive-timing information to stand apart.
Yellow accents add contrast, and the Navy SEALs logo is engraved on the caseback rather than pushed too loudly across the dial.
Calibre P.9010/GMT adds travel practicality
Inside the watch is Panerai’s automatic manufacture Calibre P.9010/GMT.
The movement measures 6 mm thick, uses 199 components and runs at 28,800 vibrations per hour.
Its twin-barrel construction gives the watch a three-day power reserve, a practical figure for a large automatic sports watch that may not be worn every day.
Alongside hours, minutes, small seconds and date, the movement adds a second time zone.
The local hour hand can be adjusted independently without disturbing the minute hand, which is exactly the kind of function frequent travellers tend to appreciate in daily use.
A stop-seconds function is also included for more precise setting.
Panerai fits the PAM01089 on a black rubber strap with a sandblasted titanium trapezoidal buckle, and an additional grey canvas strap is supplied in the box.
The presentation box is made from blue cherry wood and includes a dedicated tool for strap changes.
The Florida Experience Programme is part of the appeal
This is not only a limited production watch, but also an entry into one of Panerai’s Experience Programme events.
Owners of the Submersible Navy SEALs Afniotech Experience PAM01089 will be invited to Florida in March 2027 for a three-day programme shaped around the training methods and operational setting associated with the U.S. Navy SEALs.
The activities are centred on endurance, teamwork and field-style challenges, which puts the watch in a familiar Panerai lane.
It’s less about discreet ownership and more about tying a highly specialised object to a physical, memorable event.
