Panerai’s Florence story is inseparable from the city’s watchmaking memory, and the brand is leaning into that history with two new Luminor Firenze 8 Giorni models.
The PAM01734 and PAM01794 celebrate 100 years of the boutique in Piazza San Giovanni, the address that looks onto Florence Cathedral and remains one of Panerai’s most important locations.
Both watches use a 44 mm Luminor case, a manual-wind manufacture movement with eight days of autonomy, and dial details that bring the words “Panerai Firenze” back to the front of the watch.

A Florence anniversary with real brand weight
Panerai’s relationship with Florence reaches back to 1860, when Giovanni Panerai opened a watch shop, workshop and watchmaking school at Ponte alle Grazie.
The business later moved through the city before arriving in Piazza San Giovanni in 1926, inside the Archbishop’s Palace and facing one of Florence’s most recognisable landmarks.
That shop, long known as Orologeria Svizzera, wasn’t simply a point of sale.
It functioned as a working watchmaking space where watches were assembled, serviced and repaired, while Panerai’s ties with Swiss watch houses helped build the technical fluency that would later shape the brand’s professional instruments.
The other side of the Panerai identity came through its work with the Italian Navy, a relationship that put the emphasis on legibility, luminescence, water resistance and utility under pressure.
That military chapter remained outside the civilian spotlight until 1993, when Panerai presented its watches to the public market.
After Richemont acquired the company in 1997, the Florence boutique was renovated and reopened in 2001 as Panerai’s first directly owned boutique.
It has kept its historical character while pairing current collections with archival instruments, historic watches and a watchmaker’s station, which gives the address more texture than a conventional luxury retail space.
The 6152/1 cues behind the new cases
The new Luminor Firenze 8 Giorni watches take their lead from a 1960s 6152/1 military prototype, a watch notable for its “Panerai Firenze” dial signature.
That inscription now appears at 12 o’clock on both centenary models, giving the watches a direct visual link to the city rather than relying on caseback symbolism alone.
The original prototype measured 47 mm, but Panerai has chosen a more wearable 44 mm format here.
The proportions still feel unmistakably Luminor, with a cushion-shaped case middle, flat crown-protecting bridge and the familiar mix of brushed and polished surfaces.
The PAM01734 is the more precious and technically unusual of the pair, using Panerai’s Platinumtech alloy.
This platinum material is treated to improve hardness compared with conventional platinum, and it’s paired with an open sapphire caseback and 10 bar of water resistance, equivalent to about 100 metres.
It also carries one of the more charming functional details from the 6152/1 prototype.
The inside of the crown-protecting bridge features parallel grooves facing the crown, a practical modification originally intended to make winding easier when conditions were awkward, including use with gloves or in low visibility.
The PAM01794 takes the more tool-watch-leaning route with a polished stainless steel case, a brushed closed caseback and water resistance increased to 30 bar, or about 300 metres.
Its caseback is engraved with the Florence boutique façade and the words “Officine Panerai Firenze,” turning the watch over to reveal the anniversary message.
Two dials, two moods
Panerai has kept both dials free of a date window or secondary display, which is the right call for a watch leaning this heavily on mid-century military clarity.
The PAM01734 uses a circular-brushed green sandwich dial with green Super-LumiNova filling the cut-out numerals and markers.
Its vintage-inspired double pencil hands have a gold-effect finish, which plays naturally against the warmth and weight of the Platinumtech case.
The PAM01794 pairs its steel case with a circular-brushed black sandwich dial, also using green Super-LumiNova for the luminous display.
Its hands are blue-finished through a controlled oxidation process, adding a small but deliberate point of contrast without making the watch feel decorative.
Both watches are fitted with a slightly curved domed sapphire crystal, a modern material chosen to echo the look of PERSPEX crystals used on Luminor watches in the 1960s.
That detail matters because it softens the watch visually, giving the case a more period-correct character while retaining the durability expected from a contemporary Panerai.
The eight-day calibre and the logic behind it
Inside both watches is the hand-wound P.5000 manufacture calibre, a 113-part movement measuring 4.5 mm thick.
Its eight-day power reserve comes from twin barrels, keeping the watch running for more than a week between windings.
That long reserve isn’t merely a modern convenience.
Panerai’s professional watches adopted an eight-day Angelus SF 240 movement in the 1950s, giving underwater commandos longer autonomy and reducing the number of times the crown had to be operated.
Fewer winding actions meant less repeated stress on the crown assembly, an important concern for watches built around sealing and reliability.
The P.5000 carries that idea into a modern manufacture movement, with a 3 Hz frequency, an Incabloc Parechoc anti-shock device and a variable-inertia balance supported by a full traversing bridge.
Its mostly enclosed architecture has a purposeful, historical feel, while the PAM01734’s open caseback reveals horizontal brushing, blue inscriptions and red jewels.

The straps extend the Florentine thread without overplaying it.
The platinum model comes on a black Tuscan calf leather strap hot-stamped with the Florentine lily, plus an additional green rubber strap.
The steel model is delivered on dark brown Tuscan calf leather with the same lily motif, alongside a black rubber strap.
Both watches are presented in mahogany boxes with dovetail corner joints and a metal plaque depicting the historic boutique entrance.
The platinum edition receives a lacquered box, while the steel version uses a matte finish, and both include the tools needed for strap changes.
The two Luminor Firenze 8 Giorni models will also be shown during Panerai’s Immersion exhibition at the Museo Marino Marini in Florence from September 10 to 19.
As anniversary watches, these are strongest when viewed as Panerai returning to its own coordinates rather than chasing novelty.
The PAM01734 will speak to collectors who want the rarer material and prototype-specific bridge detail, while the PAM01794 offers the more robust water resistance and a clearer daily-wear argument at a far lower price.
