IWC Brings a Pool Dial to the Ingenieur Automatic 35

IWC’s revived Ingenieur line has found its modern rhythm by leaning into the architecture that made the watch distinctive in the first place.

The latest Ingenieur Automatic 35 keeps that integrated steel profile intact, but gives the compact model a brighter seasonal turn with a Pool dial in an aqua-leaning shade that suits the watch’s crisp casework.

It’s a small change on paper, yet colour matters in a watch this design-led, especially when the dial texture is one of the Ingenieur’s defining traits.

The new reference sits within the smaller Ingenieur Automatic 35 family, which brought the modern Ingenieur design into a more compact, broadly wearable format.

At 35mm across and 9.4mm thick, the watch keeps the low, integrated stance that helped make the 2023 Ingenieur Automatic 40 feel like a serious return rather than a simple archive exercise.

The Pool dial is the new attraction here, shifting the watch away from more restrained tones without turning it into a novelty piece.

Its aqua-green character works particularly well against stainless steel, giving the sharp brushing and polished chamfers more contrast in natural light.

Genta’s Ingenieur language in steel

The Ingenieur’s modern identity still traces back to Gérald Genta’s 1976 Ingenieur SL, the watch that transformed IWC’s anti-magnetic tool watch into an integrated-bracelet sports design.

That lineage is clear in the barrel-shaped case, circular bezel and five visible screws, which remain functional rather than decorative.

The dial carries the familiar grid pattern, formed from alternating vertical and horizontal blocks in negative relief.

A snailed outer track adds a cleaner frame around the textured centre, while rhodium-plated hour markers and hands are treated with Super-LumiNova for low-light readability.

The date sits at 3 o’clock with a white disc and black numerals, and the Ingenieur lightning-bolt emblem is applied at 6 o’clock.

The integrated stainless steel bracelet continues the architectural theme with H-shaped links, vertical brushing, polished central sections and bright chamfers.

The calibre behind the sapphire back

Inside is IWC’s calibre 47110, an automatic movement visible through the sapphire crystal caseback.

It runs at 28,800 vibrations per hour, or 4Hz, and offers a 42-hour power reserve.

The movement provides hours, minutes, hacking central seconds and a date, with circular graining, Geneva stripes and a gold-plated rotor adding visual polish through the rear of the case.

For daily use, the Ingenieur Automatic 35 Pool also carries a 100m water-resistance rating, giving the watch practical credibility beyond its design appeal.
