Hublot and Jeff Koons Bring Balloon Sculpture and Central Tourbillons to the Wrist

Hublot’s new partnership with Jeff Koons has arrived with two watches that take very different routes into the artist’s world.

One turns the familiar Classic Fusion into a wearable riff on Koons’ balloon-animal language, while the other uses a new automatic central tourbillon to frame a more cosmic idea of time.

It’s a sharp pairing for Hublot, a brand that has never been shy about putting contemporary art, unusual case construction and high complication watchmaking in the same conversation.

The Classic Fusion Balloon Dog by Jeff Koons is the more immediately recognisable of the two watches, because it translates the artist’s balloon-animal vocabulary directly into the case, dial and strap.

The standard 42mm Classic Fusion architecture remains visible, but its surfaces have been rounded into convex forms that mimic the pressure and taut skin of an inflated object.

The sapphire crystal, screw heads and dial all take on a domed look, giving the watch a deliberately swollen profile without pushing it into unwieldy territory.

The Balloon Dog keeps Hublot’s everyday mechanics

Inside the Classic Fusion Balloon Dog is Hublot’s HUB1710 automatic movement, a practical calibre with central hours, minutes and seconds, plus a date at 3 o’clock.

The movement runs at 28,800 vibrations per hour and offers a 50-hour power reserve.

A small but important collaborative touch appears on the seconds hand, which carries a balloon dog counterweight.

It’s the kind of detail that matters on a watch like this, because the concept depends on more than simply applying a famous artist’s name to the dial.

Each colour is limited to 200 pieces, bringing the total Classic Fusion Balloon Dog run to 600 watches.

At £19,700, it sits at the same price level as some of Hublot’s precious-metal Classic Fusion references, positioning the watch as both an art collaboration and a serious limited edition within the brand’s catalogue.

The MP-14 Origin moves into central tourbillon territory

If the Classic Fusion is the accessible visual statement, the MP-14 Origin by Jeff Koons is the high-watchmaking centrepiece.

It is also Hublot’s first automatic central tourbillon wristwatch, which makes it significant beyond the art-world association.

The case measures 44mm across and 20mm thick, with an octagonal form made from titanium and sapphire crystal.

Its box-like architecture is designed around depth and transparency, allowing the display and movement to become the main event.

The dial is built around concentric 18K white gold rings, a blue-varnished sapphire dome and the central tourbillon beneath it.

Two cube-shaped indicators move around the display, with the red marker showing the hours and the grey marker indicating minutes.

The outer ring acts as a 60-minute scale, set with baguette diamonds and blue sapphires at five-minute intervals, while the inner ring marks the hours with blue sapphires at the cardinal points.

The visual idea is cosmic rather than figurative, with the display suggesting an origin point from which time radiates outward.

A complex movement with a peripheral rotor

The technical challenge of the MP-14 is the calibre HUB9014, an automatic central tourbillon movement made from 594 components.

Central tourbillons are difficult because the movement architecture has to be reconsidered around the absence of a conventional central hand stack.

Adding automatic winding complicates that further, since a traditional central rotor would compete for the same architectural space.

Hublot solves that here with a peripheral oscillating weight, allowing the central tourbillon to remain the visual and mechanical focus.

The movement runs at 21,600 vibrations per hour and delivers a 60-hour power reserve.

Two crowns are integrated into the caseback, with one used for winding and the other for setting the time.

The caseback also includes an exhibition window, the watch name, Jeff Koons’ signature and the limited-edition marking.
