The Hermès Arceau has always been one of watchmaking’s more distinctive case designs, not because it shouts, but because its asymmetry feels so deliberate.
With the Arceau Samarcande, Hermès leans directly into its equestrian heritage while entering one of traditional horology’s most demanding territories, the minute repeater.
The result is a 38 mm precious-metal watch with a horse-shaped crystal dial opening, an automatic chiming movement and a sense of theatre that still feels carefully controlled.

At a glance
- Hermès has introduced the Arceau Samarcande, a minute repeater housed in the maison’s asymmetrical Arceau case.
- The watch features a blue or white Saint-Louis crystal dial with a horse-shaped sapphire crystal aperture and three-gong chiming mechanism.
- Three versions are offered, including white gold, white gold with diamonds and rose gold with diamonds.
An Arceau with deep equestrian roots
Hermès began in 1837 as a maker of harnesses and saddles, and that origin story still informs some of its most convincing watches.
The Arceau case, designed by Henri d’Originy in 1978, is one of the clearest examples.
Its round profile is paired with asymmetrical lugs inspired by stirrups, with the upper lugs appearing to arc outward while the lower lugs sit more compactly against the case.

On the Samarcande, that architecture matters because it gives a highly complicated watch a softer, more wearable character.
At 38 mm, the case avoids the oversized posture often associated with chiming complications, and the design places the dial rather than the case mass at the centre of attention.
A crystal dial shaped by the horse
The dial is the immediate focal point.

Hermès offers the Samarcande with either a blue or white Saint-Louis crystal dial, with a horse-shaped aperture formed in sapphire crystal.
A further sapphire crystal covers the display, protecting the blown-glass dial construction while preserving the watch’s layered visual depth.
The horse motif is not printed decoration or a token emblem.

It opens the dial architecture, giving a partial view of the movement beneath and turning the maison’s equestrian signature into part of the watch’s structure.
Skeletonised feuille-style hour and minute hands circle the display, while inclined Arabic numerals occupy the arc from 5 to 11 o’clock.
The horse-shaped opening replaces the remaining hour markers, though a surrounding minute track helps keep the watch legible.

The diamond-set versions add brilliant stones to the bezel and smaller diamonds around the dial aperture.
The non-set blue dial version is arguably the most direct expression of the idea, letting the crystal work and negative space carry the drama.
The sound of a three-gong minute repeater
The Samarcande is powered by the Hermès Manufacture H1297, an automatic movement visible through the exhibition caseback.

Its headline complication is the minute repeater, activated by a slide on the left side of the case.
Push the slide upward and the mechanism sounds the time on three gongs, a detail that separates it from more conventional two-gong repeaters.
Minute repeaters remain among the most prized complications because they ask a watch to become both mechanical instrument and acoustic object.

For Hermès, the complication also makes sense creatively, as the brand often works best when craft, whimsy and mechanical seriousness are allowed to overlap.
Three precious-metal executions
The Arceau Samarcande is offered in three variations.
There is a white gold model with a blue crystal dial, a white gold diamond-set version with a white dial and a rose gold diamond-set version with a white dial.

All three share the same essential composition, including the 38 mm case, the horse-shaped aperture, the asymmetrical Arceau lugs and the minute repeater slide.
The crown is marked with an H and shaped with a fluted grip, a small but useful detail on a watch where tactile interaction is part of the experience.

The Arceau Samarcande works because it doesn’t treat high complication watchmaking and Hermès design as separate ideas.

It gives the minute repeater a visual identity rooted in the maison’s history, then contains that flourish within a compact, elegant case that still feels unmistakably Arceau.
