Grand Seiko’s Evolution 9 collection has always carried a heavy brief.
It’s the brand’s modern design platform, a place where the sharp geometry of historic Grand Seiko is reworked for contemporary automatic watches.
The latest refresh gives the collection a meaningful practical upgrade, with nine new references, improved bracelet tapering, tool-free micro-adjustment and, on the Spring Drive side, the U.F.A. caliber 9RB2.

The 44GS idea rebalanced for today
Evolution 9 began in 2020 as part of Grand Seiko’s 60th anniversary year, but its roots reach back to the 44GS of 1967.
That watch helped define what became known as Taro Tanaka’s Grammar of Design, a disciplined approach built around flat planes, broad reflective surfaces and distortion-free polishing.
Evolution 9 keeps the clarity of that language while softening its rigidity for modern wear.
The cases still rely on crisp planes, Zaratsu-polished accents, flat dials, faceted hands and strong indexes, including the emphatic marker at 12 o’clock.
The shift is in the balance of finishes.
Rather than leaning heavily on mirrored surfaces, the newer design uses more hairline brushing so that the polished facets appear sharper and more deliberate.
The proportions also reflect a different type of watchmaking from the slim hand-wound architecture of the 44GS era.
Evolution 9 cases are shaped to sit with a lower centre of gravity, while wider bracelets spread the mass more evenly across the wrist.
Hi-Beat staples meet U.F.A. Spring Drive
The nine-watch refresh is divided between four mechanical Hi-Beat models and five Spring Drive references.
The mechanical group keeps Grand Seiko’s caliber 9SA5 and includes the White Birch SLGH031, Night Birch SLGH029, Green Birch SLGH033 and Genbi Valley SLGH035.
The bigger movement change comes in the Spring Drive models.
Grand Seiko has moved from the five-day caliber 9RA2 to the three-day U.F.A. caliber 9RB2 for the White Birch SLGB009, Atera Valley SLGB011, Lake Suwa SLGB013, 37mm Lake Suwa SLGB015 and Moonlit Lake Suwa SLGB007.
For enthusiasts, the 37mm Lake Suwa SLGB015 is likely to be one of the most closely watched pieces in the update.
It brings the Evolution 9 language into a smaller case while keeping the nature-inspired dial work that has become central to Grand Seiko’s modern identity.
The Lake Suwa dials are brighter this time, with a sunray treatment that gives the surface more movement as the light changes.
Where earlier executions felt more overtly rippled, these versions appear softer and more luminous, shifting from deep blue to a more vivid tone on the wrist.
The Moonlit Lake Suwa SLGB007 uses the same general pattern in a black sunray finish, with subtle brown undertones appearing under direct light.
The Spring Drive White Birch SLGB009 also receives a sunray finish, helping separate it visually from the mechanical White Birch while preserving the bark-inspired character of the dial.
The Genbi Valley SLGH035 continues Grand Seiko’s landscape-driven approach, with an irregular pressed texture inspired by rugged rock formations shaped by the Iwai River.
Ever-Brilliant Steel and High-Intensity Titanium define the cases
Seven of the nine new watches are made in Ever-Brilliant Steel, Grand Seiko’s notably bright stainless steel alloy.
Its whiter tone suits the Evolution 9 case architecture, especially where brushed surfaces and polished edges meet in tight transitions.
The material also has a PREN rating above 40, a measure of resistance to localized pitting corrosion, particularly in chloride-rich environments such as salt water.
For context, conventional 316L stainless steel is around 25, while 904L is around 35.
The Night Birch SLGH029 and Moonlit Lake Suwa SLGB007 instead use High-Intensity Titanium.
That alloy keeps the familiar lightness and corrosion resistance of titanium while offering greater hardness and scratch resistance than conventional titanium and stainless steel.
Crucially for Grand Seiko, it can also take the kind of high-polish finishing needed for Zaratsu-polished surfaces.
The clasp is the practical headline
The bracelet update may be the most important everyday change in the refreshed Evolution 9 line.
On the 40mm models, the bracelet now tapers from 22mm at the case to 18mm at the clasp.
On the 37mm Lake Suwa SLGB015, it moves from 20mm to 16mm.
That greater taper reduces the sense of bulk under the wrist and gives the bracelet a more natural drape.
It also answers one of the more common talking points around Grand Seiko bracelets, especially as competing luxury sports watches have become more focused on adjustment and comfort.
The new clasp offers three positions of tool-free micro-adjustment across a total range of 6mm.
The mechanism uses a spring-loaded engagement pin that locks into grooves inside the clasp, allowing the bracelet to slide into position once the end is lifted and pressed.
A resin contact surface is used inside the clasp to reduce friction and wear.
It’s a compact solution, but an important one, because small wrist-size changes across a warm day can alter how a watch feels more than any case measurement on paper.
