Grand Seiko Refines Four Evolution 9 Hi-Beat Classics with a Better Bracelet

Grand Seiko’s Evolution 9 collection has become one of the clearest expressions of the brand’s modern watchmaking language.

For October 2026, four of its best-known Hi-Beat mechanical models are being refreshed with new references, a more tapered bracelet and a tool-free micro-adjustment clasp.

The cases, dials and calibre remain largely familiar, which makes this update more about wearability than reinvention.

A measured refresh for the Evolution 9 Hi-Beat line

The updated quartet consists of the Night Birch SLGH029, White Birch SLGH031, Green Birch SLGH033 and Genbi Valley SLGH035.

They replace the SLGH017, SLGH005, SLGH011 and SLGH021 respectively, while keeping the fundamental proportions that made these watches important pieces in Grand Seiko’s current catalogue.

Each model uses the Evolution 9 case at 40mm across, 11.7mm thick and 47mm lug-to-lug.

The shape remains sharply faceted, with brushed surfaces set against Zaratsu-polished planes, a box-shaped sapphire crystal and a sapphire display back.

Water resistance is rated to 100 metres, helped by a screw-down crown and screwed caseback.

Material choices are slightly adjusted across the range.

The White Birch SLGH031 and Green Birch SLGH033 now use Ever-Brilliant Steel, matching the Genbi Valley SLGH035, while the Night Birch SLGH029 continues in High-Intensity Titanium for both case and bracelet.

Birch textures and Genbi Valley colour stay in place

Grand Seiko has wisely left the dials largely untouched.

The Birch models retain their textured surfaces in silver-white, black and dark green, each designed to catch light across a finely patterned surface rather than rely on overt decoration.

The applied markers and hands remain broad, faceted and polished, giving the dials the strong contrast that defines many of Grand Seiko’s best modern watches.

The Genbi Valley SLGH035 keeps its light water-green dial treatment, though the seconds hand is now silver-toned rather than blue.

It’s a small change, but it gives the watch a slightly calmer appearance and brings the colour balance closer to the rest of the dial furniture.

The 9SA5 calibre remains the mechanical centrepiece

Inside all four watches is Grand Seiko’s automatic calibre 9SA5.

This is the brand’s contemporary Hi-Beat movement, running at 36,000 vibrations per hour, or 5Hz.

Its Dual Impulse Escapement works with a free-sprung balance, a combination developed for greater efficiency, precision and shock resistance.

The movement also uses twin barrels, giving the watch an 80-hour power reserve despite the high-frequency rate.

Grand Seiko rates the calibre to +5 to -3 seconds per day.

The 9SA5 is visible through the caseback, where its broad bridges, striping and bevelled edges give it a warmer, more architectural look than the brand’s earlier mechanical calibres.

A new bracelet makes the biggest practical difference

The most meaningful change is on the wrist.

Grand Seiko has fitted these models with a newly designed bracelet that has a more tapered profile, addressing one of the more practical areas of daily wear.

The clasp now includes three-step micro-adjustment, allowing tool-free changes in 2mm increments.

That detail matters because steel and titanium bracelets can feel dramatically different across a full day as wrist size changes with temperature, movement and travel.

For collectors who already admired the Evolution 9 case and dial work, the upgraded clasp may be the part of the update they feel most often.

Grand Seiko has kept the strengths of these Evolution 9 Hi-Beat models intact while improving the part owners interact with every time the watch goes on the wrist.
