Fears Gives the Brunswick 40 a Nautical Edge With the Helmsman ES

Fears has been steadily moving beyond dress-watch territory, and the Brunswick 40 ‘Helmsman’ ES is its clearest step yet into proper maritime-minded watchmaking.

The new model keeps the cushion-shaped Brunswick identity intact, but adds more water resistance, a glare-reducing finish and a crisp white-and-blue dial suited to life around the water.

It’s also notable for being a non-limited Endurance Specification version of the Brunswick 40, giving the collection a more permanent tool-watch expression.

The Brunswick has always been one of Fears’ most recognisable shapes, with its soft cushion case giving the watch a character that sits apart from conventional round-cased designs.

For the Helmsman ES, that familiar 40mm silhouette has been reworked with a stronger practical brief.

Water resistance rises from 150 metres on the standard Brunswick to 200 metres, supported by a screw-down crown.

That doesn’t turn it into an extreme dive watch, but it does place the model in a more confident position for boating, sailing and regular exposure to wet conditions.

The Endurance Specification label first appeared within Fears’ recent move toward more robust watches, and here it gives the Brunswick line a distinct maritime personality.

Matte finishing changes the character of the case

The biggest visual shift is the removal of polished case surfaces.

Where the standard Brunswick uses polishing and brushing for a more refined dress-watch contrast, the Helmsman ES adopts brushed and media-blasted surfaces throughout.

The effect is more subdued and purposeful, with the frosted texture cutting down harsh reflections in bright conditions.

It also makes the watch feel less formal without losing the distinctive geometry that defines the Brunswick case.

That decision matters because a watch intended for use around water and sunlight needs to be legible rather than theatrical.

The dial follows the same functional logic, using a matte white base with marine blue accents across the peripheral minute track, hands and Arabic numerals.

Fears has kept the display deliberately clean, with only the brand logo and England inscription adding detail beyond the timekeeping elements.

The hands and numerals are polished rather than matte, a sensible choice for visibility because their smaller surfaces add definition without creating the kind of glare a polished case can produce.

Paired with the bright white FKM rubber strap and marine blue stitching, the watch leans into its nautical theme without becoming costume-like.

La Joux-Perret power behind the exhibition back

Inside the Brunswick 40 ‘Helmsman’ ES is the La Joux-Perret G101 automatic movement.

The calibre runs at 28,800 vibrations per hour and offers a 68-hour power reserve, giving it enough autonomy to be left off the wrist for a weekend and still be running when picked up again.

Fears has fitted the movement with a custom rotor carrying a Bristol flower motif, visible through the exhibition caseback.

It’s a neat reminder that, even in its most tool-oriented Brunswick form so far, the watch is still positioned as a luxury object rather than a stripped-back instrument.
