Chopard’s Happy Diamonds Heritage brings one of the maison’s most recognisable ideas back to its 1970s roots.
The new 34 mm model revives the cushion-shaped case, black onyx dial and freely moving diamonds that made the original Happy Diamonds watch such a departure from conventional gem-setting.
Nearly five decades on, the concept still feels unusually alive, particularly now that Chopard has paired it with a hand-wound in-house movement.

At a glance
- Chopard has introduced the Happy Diamonds Heritage, a re-edition inspired by its 1976 Happy Diamonds watch.
- The 34 mm version features an 18ct ethical yellow gold case, a deep black onyx dial and 21 free-moving diamonds.
- The watch is powered by the hand-wound Chopard 10.01-C calibre and is listed at £39,000 RRP.
A 1976 idea with fresh mechanical weight
The Happy Diamonds concept began with a simple but radical shift in how diamonds could behave on a watch.
Rather than setting stones firmly into metal, Chopard allowed them to move freely between layers of sapphire crystal, turning the dial into a small stage for motion and light.
The idea was inspired by the visual effect of sunlight on the spray of a Black Forest waterfall, and it went on to win the Golden Rose of Baden-Baden in 1976.

Caroline Scheufele, Chopard’s Co-President and Artistic Director, has long associated the design with the family phrase that diamonds are happier when they are free.
That sentiment remains the heart of the Heritage model, but the execution here is more than nostalgic.
The cushion case and onyx dial do the heavy lifting
The 34 mm Happy Diamonds Heritage is made from 18ct ethical yellow gold, a description Chopard uses for the precious metal across this model.

Its cushion case measures 34 mm by 34 mm and has a height of 8.53 mm, giving the watch a compact but visibly precious presence on the wrist.
The case has rounded edges and a polished finish, keeping the geometry soft rather than severe.
A 5.20 mm onyx cabochon sits in the winding crown, echoing the dial’s deep black surface.

That onyx dial is the visual anchor of the watch.
It is left without numerals or hour markers, so the gold hands and moving diamonds can carry the composition without interruption.
The contrast is deliberate and effective, with the black onyx giving the diamonds a dark, mirror-like field to cross as the wrist moves.
Twenty-one diamonds, deliberately set free
The 21 diamonds are housed between two layers of glare-proofed sapphire crystal, moving around the dial through the natural motion of the wearer’s wrist.
Each stone sits in a gold capsule with a bevelled base, a construction intended to stop the diamond facets from scratching the glass.
It’s a technical detail that matters because the appeal of the watch depends on movement that feels effortless rather than fragile.
The result is a jewellery watch that doesn’t rely only on carat weight or surface decoration.
Its personality comes from choreography, with the dial changing constantly as the diamonds scatter, cluster and separate.
A hand-wound calibre behind the spectacle
Chopard has fitted the 34 mm Happy Diamonds Heritage with the hand-wound Chopard 10.01-C movement.
Visible through the exhibition sapphire caseback, the calibre measures 15.70 mm in diameter and 2.90 mm thick.
It runs at 21,600 vibrations per hour, or 3 Hz, and offers a 45-hour power reserve.
The movement also features a variable-inertia balance, while the bridges are finished with Côtes de Genève.
For a watch that is so visually defined by playfulness, the choice of a manual calibre adds a useful sense of ritual.
Winding it keeps the owner connected to the watch in a way that suits the tactile, kinetic nature of the dial.

The Happy Diamonds Heritage will appeal to collectors who want Chopard’s jewellery-watch language in a form that feels close to the original, but with enough mechanical substance to stand on more than charm alone.
Its strength is that it doesn’t try to modernise the idea out of recognition, instead letting the cushion case, onyx dial and restless diamonds explain why the 1976 concept still has life in it.
