BYD’s luxury ambitions are moving well beyond fast SUVs and high-end EV statements.
A heavily camouflaged Yangwang flagship sedan has been spotted testing in the UAE, giving the clearest public look yet at a limousine that appears aimed at the very top end of the market.
Its scale, upright front end and possible coach-door layout point toward a very different kind of BYD, one intended to sit in the conversation around ultra-luxury sedans rather than merely premium electric cars.

At a glance
- BYD’s Yangwang brand is developing an ultra-luxury flagship sedan, internally known as HU.
- The camouflaged prototype shows a tall grille, split vertical headlights, a roof-mounted LiDAR sensor and limousine-like proportions.
- Earlier reports suggest the sedan could measure around 5,500mm long and may be priced above 2 million yuan, roughly $300,000.
A limousine-shaped statement from Yangwang
Yangwang has quickly become BYD’s showcase brand for more ambitious engineering and more assertive design.
The latest sedan prototype keeps that theme intact, even under heavy camouflage.
The front end is dominated by a tall, rectangular grille, flanked by vertically stacked split headlights.

It’s a formal face, with the sort of upright stance usually associated with traditional chauffeur-driven luxury cars rather than aero-led electric sedans.
The proportions are just as telling.
Earlier official teaser images showed an exceptionally long side profile with a short front overhang and an extended rear section, while earlier reports have suggested an overall length of around 5,500mm.
That would place it firmly in limousine territory, where rear-seat space and visual presence matter as much as performance figures.
Coach-door cues and a roof-mounted LiDAR unit
One of the more interesting details is the apparent use of rear-hinged coach doors, visible in previous teaser images.
If that layout reaches production, it would underline the car’s focus on rear-cabin theatre and passenger access.
The UAE prototype also carries a LiDAR sensor above the windshield.
That confirms the test car is fitted with roof-mounted laser-sensing hardware, though it doesn’t confirm what driver-assistance functions the production model will offer.
For a flagship sedan, the presence of LiDAR is still significant.
It suggests Yangwang is using this car not only as a luxury statement, but also as a platform for more advanced vehicle technology within the BYD group.
Solid-state battery rumours add intrigue
Technical details remain under wraps, including the powertrain, output and range.
What makes the project especially interesting is the suggestion that it could become BYD’s first model to use solid-state battery technology.
That remains unconfirmed, but it would be a major development if it makes production.
Solid-state batteries are widely viewed as one of the next major steps for electric vehicles, though the final specifications and real-world benefits of this sedan have not been disclosed.
Pricing is also still unofficial.
Reports have suggested the flagship could exceed 2 million yuan, which is roughly $300,000.
At that level, Yangwang wouldn’t simply be chasing mainstream luxury buyers.
It would be positioning the car against established ultra-luxury sedans and attempting to prove that a Chinese electric flagship can compete on presence, technology and prestige.
