Bulgari Gives the Octo Finissimo Perpetual Calendar a Blue Titanium Finish

Bulgari’s Octo Finissimo line has rarely treated thinness as a party trick.

With the Perpetual Calendar, the Roman jeweller and watchmaker turned one of haute horlogerie’s most traditional complications into something stark, architectural and almost improbably slim.

The latest version keeps the mechanics unchanged, but shifts the mood with a full blue titanium treatment that makes the watch feel cooler, sharper and more monochromatic on the wrist.

The Octo Finissimo Perpetual Calendar arrived in 2021 with a headline figure that still defines it.

At 5.80mm thick, it remains the world’s thinnest perpetual calendar wristwatch, a measurement that feels especially unlikely once you remember how much information the dial is managing.

This new edition doesn’t alter the formula mechanically.

Instead, Bulgari has taken the sandblasted titanium case and applied a blue PVD coating, giving the already sculptural Octo case a more graphic and contemporary presence.

The result is less about adding flash and more about changing the tension of the watch.

Where the familiar titanium version leans into pale industrial restraint, this blue execution gives the sharp facets and broad planes a darker, more unified character.

The Octo geometry wears blue well

The 40mm case keeps the layered, angular architecture that has made the Octo Finissimo one of modern watchmaking’s most recognisable silhouettes.

Its slimness matters, but so does the way the design distributes that thinness across a wide, architectural case shape rather than hiding it inside a conventional round profile.

A polished stainless-steel crown with a black ceramic insert interrupts the blue case just enough to avoid complete visual flatness.

The watch also has a sapphire caseback and 30 metres of water resistance, both consistent with its ultra-thin dress-complication character.

The blue varnished dial follows the monochromatic idea without becoming difficult to read.

Grey rhodium-plated skeletonised hands and silvered indexes provide contrast, while the blue alligator strap brings the whole composition back into one tonal family.

The perpetual display stays unusually restrained

Perpetual calendars often announce themselves with sub-dials, scales and layered indications.

Bulgari’s interpretation is far more controlled, which is part of why this watch has always felt distinct within the category.

The retrograde date spans the upper half of the dial, giving the display its most prominent arc.

Below it, the day and month indications sit in the lower section, with the leap-year display positioned at 6 o’clock.

It’s a full perpetual calendar, yet the dial reads with the restraint of a much simpler watch.

That tension between complication and clarity remains the strongest argument for the Octo Finissimo Perpetual Calendar, regardless of colour.

A 2.75mm automatic movement with serious work to do

Inside is Bulgari’s in-house calibre BVL 305, an automatic integrated perpetual calendar movement derived from the Octo Finissimo Automatic calibre BVL 138.

The movement measures just 2.75mm thick, which is central to the watch’s overall 5.80mm profile.

Despite that size, it comprises 408 components and runs at 21,600 vibrations per hour.

It displays hours, minutes, retrograde date, day, month and leap year, with a stated power reserve of 60 hours.

That mechanical density is easy to overlook because the watch looks so pared back.

In practice, that contrast is the point, since the Octo Finissimo has always been at its best when a technical achievement is made to look almost effortless.
