Breguet’s Classique Grande Sonnerie 1905 Is a Pocket Watch of Rare Ambition

Breguet has marked its 250th anniversary with several important pieces, but the Classique Grande Sonnerie Métiers d’Art 1905 sits in a category of its own.

This is not simply a complicated watch dressed for ceremony. It is a made-on-request pocket watch that brings together a grande sonnerie, petite sonnerie, minute repeater, tourbillon and a full suite of hand decoration in a single 56.5 mm case.

It also marks Breguet’s first pocket watch of this kind in more than 20 years, giving the creation a significance that goes beyond anniversary symbolism.

The Classique Grande Sonnerie Métiers d’Art 1905 is housed in an 18K Breguet gold case measuring 56.5 mm across, a scale that gives the complications and decoration room to breathe.

Its dial layout follows a regulator format, separating the time indications in a way associated with precision clocks and observatory instruments.

Hours sit on an off-centre white Grand Feu enamel dial at 12 o’clock, with black petit feu enamel Breguet numerals.

Minutes are read from a long central hand sweeping over its own chapter ring, while the seconds are displayed on the tourbillon cage at 4:30.

The central dial area carries a hand-guilloché Quai de l’Horloge motif inspired by the geography of the Île de la Cité and Île Saint-Louis in Paris, linking the watch directly to the setting of Abraham-Louis Breguet’s historic workshop.

Blued steel Breguet hands, a visible signature and a discreet pantograph-engraved secret signature complete the familiar house language without turning the dial into a period exercise.

The striking works take centre stage

Inside is the manually wound Calibre 508GS, a 539-component movement with 43 jewels and a traditional 18,000 vibrations-per-hour frequency.

Its one-minute tourbillon uses a variable-inertia balance and a blued steel Breguet overcoil hairspring, connecting the watch to one of the founder’s most enduring inventions.

The movement delivers 56 hours of autonomy for timekeeping, or 36 hours when the grande sonnerie is in operation.

The striking mechanism is the technical heart of the watch, with Grande Sonnerie, Petite Sonnerie and Silent modes available, plus an on-demand minute repeater regardless of the selected setting.

Breguet has equipped the mechanism with a magnetic regulator developed by its own research and development team.

Rather than using a conventional mechanical governor, conductive rotating arms move through magnetic fields to generate eddy currents, creating a controlled electromagnetic braking effect.

The practical result is a contactless and silent regulator that controls the rhythm of the chimes without the familiar buzzing often heard in traditional repeater governors.

Breguet has also reversed the usual architecture by placing the striking mechanism on the back of the movement rather than the dial side.

Open the rear cover and the racks, snails, levers and hammers are visible in motion, making the mechanics part of the ownership experience rather than something hidden behind the dial.

Métiers d’Art work beyond the dial

The hand-finishing extends throughout the calibre, with bevelling, straight graining, polishing and traditional decorative techniques applied to individual components.

The striking barrel bridge carries a Petit Trianon guilloché motif developed for this watch and inspired by ornamental details at Versailles.

The covers are made from hand-engraved and enamelled Breguet gold, with the Seine and the Quai de l’Horloge rendered in Bleu de France enamel.

That historic blue tone appears again in details such as the blue PVD-coated striking hammers, while the white-gold gongs receive Breguet’s proprietary BRG25 colouring.

One of the more unusual craft details is found on the cover edges, where Breguet has applied a three-dimensional guilloché treatment to surfaces that would more commonly be polished.

The case middle also carries the Quai de l’Horloge motif, and the lower crystal bears a subtle “250 YEARS” inscription.

The pocket watch is accompanied by a 414 mm chain in 18K Breguet gold, composed of 37 links with fastening elements decorated in the same Quai de l’Horloge guilloché pattern.

Even the presentation box has been treated as part of the object’s narrative.

It is handmade from wood taken from the last remaining oak associated with Marie-Antoinette’s estate and follows the geometry of the French Pavilion at the Petit Trianon.

Inside, a resonance plate made from wood from the Risoud forest in the Vallée de Joux is intended to enhance the acoustic performance of the striking mechanism.
