BMW M has reached a significant production milestone in the same city where its performance story began.
The one millionth M car has rolled off the line at BMW Group Plant Munich, and fittingly, it was an M3 Competition finished in Fire Orange.
It’s a neat moment of symmetry for a division that built its reputation on turning road cars into something sharper, faster and more emotionally direct without losing daily usability.

At a glance
- BMW Group Plant Munich has produced its one millionth BMW M vehicle.
- The milestone car is a Fire Orange BMW M3 Competition.
- BMW is investing around €650 million in the Munich site ahead of all-electric vehicle production, including the first all-electric M3 from 2027.
A Munich milestone with M3 significance
The choice of an M3 Competition as the milestone car feels appropriate rather than accidental.
The first BMW M3 was built at the Munich plant more than 40 years ago, turning a compact executive saloon into one of the defining performance cars of its era.
Since then, the M3 has become the centre of gravity for BMW M, even as the division has expanded into coupes, convertibles, estates, SUVs and high-performance electrified models.

The Fire Orange paint gives the one millionth car an appropriately visible identity, linking the occasion to the bolder side of M’s character.
BMW M’s formula still holds
BMW M was founded in 1972, initially with motorsport at its core.
Its enduring appeal has come from the way it blends track-bred performance with cars people can realistically use every day.

That balance is central to the M3 Competition’s role in the modern line-up, where outright pace matters, but so do cabin comfort, long-distance usability and the ability to feel special without being impractical.
Franciscus van Meel, CEO of BMW M, said the one millionth car shows that the division’s blend of road and racetrack capability remains valued by customers, four decades after the first M3 arrived.
Munich prepares for the electric M era
The production milestone arrives while BMW’s Munich plant is undergoing the largest transformation in its history.

BMW is investing around €650 million into the site to prepare it for fully electric vehicle production.
The work includes new production buildings, a new body shop, updated assembly areas and expanded logistics facilities.
From 2027, the plant is scheduled to build the first-ever all-electric BMW M3, marking one of the most important shifts yet for the M brand.

For enthusiasts, that makes this milestone more than a production statistic.
It captures BMW M at a handover point, with combustion-powered icons still defining the brand’s identity while Munich is being reshaped for the next generation of performance cars.
