Blancpain Gives the Bathyscaphe a Faithful 1968 Anniversary Edition

Blancpain has taken a notably restrained route for the 70th anniversary of the Bathyscaphe.

Rather than stretching the idea into a broad tribute, the new Fifty Fathoms Bathyscaphe 70th Anniversary Limited Edition looks directly to a 1968 reference and keeps the essentials intact.

The result is a compact, period-minded dive watch with modern movement technology, 300 metres of water resistance and a case size that feels refreshingly deliberate.

A civilian Fifty Fathoms with 1960s proportions

The Bathyscaphe has always occupied a distinct place inside Blancpain’s dive-watch story.

Introduced in 1956, it was conceived as the more relaxed counterpart to the Fifty Fathoms, a watch that carried serious underwater credibility in a form better suited to daily wear.

That distinction matters because the Fifty Fathoms of the era typically sat around 41mm to 42mm, a large format by mid-century standards.

The hands and markers are treated with vintage-colored Super-LumiNova, a practical update that still leaves the watch visually anchored in the late 1960s.

The bezel follows the historic design closely, though Blancpain has replaced the black Hesalite insert with ceramic and lacquered numerals.

Inside is Blancpain’s automatic manufacture caliber 1150, offering a 100-hour power reserve and a silicon hairspring for improved resistance to magnetism.

The movement drives hours, minutes, seconds and date, keeping the functionality straightforward and true to the watch’s everyday brief.

Unlike the closed back of the historic model, this edition uses a sapphire caseback that reveals the movement and its 18K gold oscillating weight.

Water resistance is rated to 300 metres, which gives the watch proper dive-watch capability despite its compact, dressier stance.
