Bentley has switched on one of the most important pieces of its next-generation manufacturing plan at Crewe.
The marque’s new paint shop is now in operation, bringing a more flexible, more efficient and more bespoke approach to finishing its cars, beginning with a one-of-one Continental GT S wearing a newly developed Spectral Verdant paint.
It’s an industrial story on paper, but for Bentley it’s also a design story, because paint has become one of the clearest ways its customers express individuality.

At a glance
- Bentley’s new 12,500 sqm paint shop has begun operations at the brand’s Crewe headquarters.
- The facility debuts with a one-of-one Continental GT S finished in new Spectral Verdant paint from the By Mulliner extended range.
- Continental GT, Continental GTC, Flying Spur and Bentley’s first battery-electric vehicle will be painted there immediately, with Bentayga to follow in the coming years.
A major new chapter for Crewe manufacturing
The new paint shop covers a 12,500-square-metre footprint and is now the tallest building at Bentley’s Crewe site.
Its arrival forms part of the brand’s wider “Dream Factory” transformation, a long-term reworking of the company’s historic headquarters into a more digital, flexible and energy-conscious manufacturing base.
Bentley will use the facility immediately for the Continental GT and GTC, the Flying Spur and its first battery-electric vehicle, which is due to launch later this year.

The Bentayga will be integrated into the new paint operation in the coming years.
For a brand where paint can range from formal understatement to deeply personal commissions, the building has been designed with room for future bespoke processes rather than simply replacing an older production line.
Spectral Verdant shows what the new facility can do
To mark the start of operations, Bentley completed a one-of-one Continental GT S in a new finish called Spectral Verdant.

The paint is a development of Bentley’s existing Verdant colour, enhanced with a Spectraflair effect that reveals a spectrum of colour within the green under natural light.
It’s now available to customers through the By Mulliner extended paint range, positioning it as more than a one-off demonstration shade.
The celebratory Continental GT S also carries a Union Flag racing stripe in Ghost White Pearlescent.

That stripe was hand-sprayed over several days using bespoke application techniques, giving the car a deliberately craft-led detail against the technical character of the new paint system.
The result is a neat expression of Bentley’s current direction, where traditional hand finishing and advanced manufacturing are being made to work side by side rather than compete for attention.
Inside the two-floor paint operation
The facility is arranged across two floors, with the workflow shaped around both automated application and the more manually intensive work handled by Bentley’s paint specialists.

Energy and thermal management are central to the building’s layout.
Cooler, more comfortable working conditions are maintained on the ground floor, where the most hands-on paint work takes place, while warmer air generated by high-tech paint application systems on the first floor is captured and its energy redistributed through the facility.
Bentley says the result is a paint shop that doesn’t require heating for two-thirds of the year.

The operation also moves to a water-based paint primer in place of the previous solvent-based solution.
Combined with more accurate application, reduced masking material use and a filtration monitoring system, the new facility is expected to reduce waste materials by up to 45 percent compared with the previous paint shop.
A Residual Thermal Oxidiser treats fumes from the paint process by burning them at 1000°C before air is expelled from the building.

That system is designed to reduce VOC emissions linked to Bentley’s long-term paint operations by up to 98 percent.
Automation built around bespoke paint work
One of the more interesting elements is the use of ten Automated Guided Vehicles to move bodies between workstations.
Bentley describes it as the first automotive paint shop in the world to introduce self-propelled carriers, giving the production flow more flexibility across different stations.

That matters because Bentley’s paint operation isn’t only about volume or repeatability.
The brand has been expanding its customer paint offering with finishes such as Ombré and satin treatments, and a more adaptable manufacturing system gives it greater headroom for future bespoke requests.
The same AGV technology is also being introduced into A1, the oldest building on the Crewe site, which is being transformed into Bentley’s assembly facility for battery-electric vehicles.

There, it is intended to support more accurate vehicle monitoring and better ergonomics for colleagues across the production process.
Even the exterior of the new paint shop has been treated as a kind of colour statement.
Bentley has installed 45 sets of display panels on the building, each finished in a different colour from the customer paint palette and individually painted by the same team using techniques applied to production cars.
