Armin Strom Gives the Orbit a Midnight Purple Mechanical Glow

Armin Strom’s Orbit has always been one of the more inventive modern answers to the date display.

Rather than leaving a calendar window permanently on the dial, the Biel manufacture lets the wearer call up the date only when it’s needed, using the bezel as the scale and a central pointer as the messenger.

The new Orbit Midnight Purple keeps that mechanical idea intact, but gives the watch a richer visual identity by carrying its purple theme deeper into the openworked architecture.

The Orbit Midnight Purple uses the familiar 43.4mm stainless steel case, a proportion that gives the watch enough room for its off-centred time display and mechanical calendar choreography.

A fixed black ceramic bezel carries the engraved date scale, while the word “DATE” appears in purple as a small but deliberate cue to the watch’s central trick.

The dial is a midnight purple fumé treatment with an integrated small seconds display, set against a frosted midnight-purple PVD-coated mainplate.

That decision matters because the Orbit’s architecture is highly exposed, so the colour isn’t limited to a dial surface but becomes part of the movement’s visual depth.

The faceted steel hands are made in-house, hand-polished and filled with Super-LumiNova.

Applied indices also carry luminous material, while the numerals at 12 and 6 o’clock are formed from solid blocks of Super-LumiNova for a stronger after-dark signature.

The date appears only when summoned

The defining feature remains Armin Strom’s patented date-on-demand system.

At rest, the central date hand sits quietly at 12 o’clock, keeping the dial from feeling like a conventional calendar watch.

Press the pusher at 10 o’clock and the arrow-tipped hand moves to indicate the current date on the ceramic bezel.

A second press sends it back to its neutral position, with the operation governed by a column-wheel mechanism.

The date can also be adjusted by moving the crown forward, while a caseband corrector allows quick setting.

It’s a practical complication, but its appeal is also architectural, turning a familiar daily function into a visible mechanical event.

The ASS20 calibre and bracelet-led execution

Inside is the automatic Armin Strom manufacture calibre ASS20, a micro-rotor movement developed and produced by the brand.

It runs at 25,200 vibrations per hour and uses Armin Strom’s patented Equal Force Barrel to help maintain stable energy delivery across its 72-hour power reserve.

The movement is built from 273 components and 30 jewels, with finishing that includes polished bevels, perlage, circular graining and openworked finger bridges.

Unlike the earlier purple Orbit version on a black textile strap, the Midnight Purple is fitted to an integrated stainless steel bracelet with a double-folding clasp.

That changes the character of the watch, moving it closer to a fully formed luxury sports watch while keeping the independent mechanics front and centre.
