Merano has always understood the restorative power of climate, landscape and time.
Set above the spa town in South Tyrol, Villa Eden takes that tradition and gives it a notably modern frame, combining the ease of an adults-only alpine hideaway with diagnostics, personalised protocols and a level of calm that feels increasingly rare.
It’s luxurious, certainly, but the point here isn’t indulgence for its own sake. Villa Eden is built around the idea of leaving better calibrated than you arrived.

At a glance
- Villa Eden is a 25-suite, adults-only longevity retreat on a hillside above Merano in South Tyrol.
- Its programmes combine medical diagnostics, cellular therapies, movement, spa rituals and personalised nutrition.
- Access from the UK is easier via SkyAlps’ London Gatwick to Bolzano route, with flights increasing to four weekly services from July 2026.
Merano’s alpine rhythm sets the tone
Merano sits in the north of Italy, close to the Dolomites and shaped by a climate that gives the town much of its character.
The area is known for generous sunshine, vineyards, orchards and a pace that feels distinctly South Tyrolean, part Italian, part Alpine, and quietly disciplined in the best sense.
Its appeal as a place for convalescence and retreat dates back well over a century, with Empress Elisabeth of Austria among the figures drawn to Merano in the 19th century.

Villa Eden occupies a quiet hillside position above the town, close enough to feel connected but removed enough to keep the outside world at a polite distance.
For UK travellers, Bolzano is the key arrival point.
SkyAlps launched direct flights from London Gatwick to Bolzano in April 2024 and is set to increase the route to four flights a week from July 2026, adding a Friday service that makes a long weekend in South Tyrol more realistic.

The airline operates propeller aircraft flying at lower altitudes than many commercial jets, offering unusually clear views of the Dolomites on the way in.
From Bolzano airport, the drive to Villa Eden takes under 30 minutes.
A retreat with spa history and medical intent
Villa Eden began life in 1890 as two separate villas commissioned by Dutch families who came for the mountain air.

In the 1970s, the buildings were brought together, and by 1982 the property had become Italy’s first destination spa under Karl Schmid.
Today, the retreat is led by Angelika Schmid, who took over in 1993, and her husband Hannes Illmer, whose background spans alpine hospitality, Cornell and international hotel consulting.
The couple have reshaped the property without losing its residential feel.

The suite count has been reduced from 45 to 25, while the team has grown to around 80 staff, a ratio that explains much of the hotel’s discreet precision.
The old minimum seven-day stay has also been softened, making Villa Eden more flexible without turning it into a conventional spa hotel.
It remains intentionally grown-up, with no children and no sense of performance.
The longevity programme goes far beyond pampering
Villa Eden describes itself as a pioneer in longevity, and its medical programme is the part that separates it from a good-looking mountain spa.
A stay can begin with a broad diagnostic assessment that may include epigenetic testing, biological age analysis, gut microbiome work, nutrigenomic profiling, oxidative stress testing, blood work, an ECG and high-definition skin analysis.
The results are used to shape an individual protocol rather than a fixed menu of treatments.
Medical Director Dr Emanuele De Nobili has overseen the clinical direction for 15 years, bringing experience in otolaryngology, medical hydrology and aesthetic medicine.
Therapies on offer include oxygen and ozone infusions at the DripBar, photobiomodulation, CellGym intermittent hypoxia-hyperoxia training, heavy-metal chelation, biothermic treatments, mesotherapy and reflexology.
The newest and most advanced programme is STEM-MITO Boost, which combines mitochondrial and stem cell therapies with diagnostic work and a personalised lifestyle plan.
Its focus is cellular energy, the kind that influences how rested, resilient and well-regulated the body can feel.
Villa Eden balances the clinical side with movement and touch.
Yoga is part of the daily rhythm, while morning power walks with personal trainer Mirco La Mendola move through the orchards and vineyards above the property.
Resident healer Stefan Pichler offers Touch for Health sessions, using gentle muscle testing to explore areas of physical and emotional tension.
The wellness thinking also extends to Villa Eden’s own skincare and body line, developed with natural actives and available only on property or through its e-boutique.
Angelika Schmid personally tests each formulation, with the rich Vitamin Butter standing out as the product most likely to end up in a guest’s luggage.
Suites, gardens and a quietly ambitious table
What keeps Villa Eden from feeling clinical is the setting around the medicine.
There are gardens with views across vineyards and mountains, two outdoor pools, an indoor pool, an infrared sauna and a Finnish garden sauna run in the Austrian style, where swimwear isn’t worn for hygiene reasons.
The 25 suites are spacious and composed, with private balconies, large bedrooms and generous bathrooms.
On arrival, guests find locally grown strawberries, orchids, herbal teas, a Nespresso machine and plenty of water, the sort of details that make the place feel more private villa than wellness institution.
The property’s guest history includes names such as Luciano Pavarotti and Barbra Streisand, a reminder that Villa Eden has long appealed to people who value discretion as much as comfort.
Food is treated with similar range.
The Detox Restaurant offers an organic menu without gluten, coffee, salt, added sugar or lactose, built around vegetables, fish and the belief that healthy cooking still has to give pleasure.
The Pleasure Restaurant leans into Mediterranean and South Tyrolean cooking, with a wine list that makes sense in a region known for pinot noir.
Then there is The Tasting Room, a four-table restaurant also open to non-residents who book early.
Chef Marcello Corrado, listed in the Michelin Guide and recognised among the top chefs in South Tyrol, serves five- and eight-course menus that give the property a culinary identity beyond the spa circuit.
Villa Eden’s strength is that it doesn’t ask guests to choose between medical seriousness and sensual pleasure.
It offers both, framed by the orchards, vineyards and mountain air of Merano, and that balance is what makes this South Tyrolean retreat feel genuinely restorative rather than merely well appointed.
