Van Cleef & Arpels has long treated the wristwatch as a miniature stage, and its latest Midnight Jour Nuit Phase de Lune leans fully into that idea.
The new piece expands the Maison’s day-and-night display with a moon phase and an on-demand automaton, turning an astronomical indication into a small mechanical performance.

The Jour Nuit concept has been part of Van Cleef & Arpels watchmaking since 2008, built around a 24-hour disc that stages the passage from day to night.
For the Midnight Jour Nuit Phase de Lune, that celestial display moves into a 42mm case in 18k white gold, giving the dial more room for its layered sky, horizon and lunar theatre.
The case is rhodium-plated with polished and brushed finishing, and the design is notably restrained by Van Cleef & Arpels standards, with no diamonds used on the watch.
The result still feels precious, but the emphasis is on material, motion and atmosphere rather than gem-setting.
Aventurine sky and a hidden lunar cycle
The upper half of the dial is made from custom black Murano aventurine glass, developed with bronze-toned crystalline inclusions that create a deep, flickering night sky.
Across this scene, a guilloché yellow gold sun and a white mother-of-pearl moon travel on the 24-hour day-night disc, accompanied by tiny stars.
Van Cleef & Arpels has then integrated the moon phase into that same celestial landscape through a round aperture cut into the aventurine.
Below it sits a second disc that follows the moon’s 29.5-day cycle, allowing the watch to track the waxing and waning of the lunar phase.
The lower portion of the dial is mother-of-pearl with a Clous de Paris guilloché pattern and a hand-painted gradient from black to white.
Its softly curved upper edge acts as the horizon, separating the luminous lower field from the darker astronomical display above.
The 10-second lunar performance
The most distinctive feature sits behind the pusher at 8 o’clock.
Press it, and the watch activates an automaton that rotates the dial through 360 degrees over 10 seconds, revealing the exact moon phase on demand even during daylight hours.
It’s a deliberately poetic solution to a practical issue, since conventional moon phases can be easier to read when the indication is isolated from the broader scene.
Here, the complication becomes part of the spectacle, while the movement maintains accurate timekeeping during the animation.

Caseback artwork and automatic movement
The white gold caseback is engraved with the topography of the lunar surface, continuing the theme after the watch leaves the wrist.
Most of the in-house automatic movement is concealed, but the rotor remains part of the storytelling.
A sapphire crystal set over the rotor depicts the cosmos as seen from the Moon, with miniature paintings of three planets and the Earth placed at the centre.
The movement offers a 36-hour power reserve and drives the day-night display, the moon phase, and the on-demand lunar indication.
