Tudor Shrinks the Black Bay Chrono Into a 39mm Bumblebee

Tudor has given the Black Bay Chrono its most important ergonomic update yet.

The new Black Bay Chrono 39 Bumblebee keeps the muscular character of the line, but trims the case down to a size many collectors have been waiting for.

It also arrives with one of Tudor’s boldest dials, a matte yellow layout with blackened details that puts it firmly inside the brand’s more expressive “Daring Watches” territory.

A smaller Black Bay Chrono with a sharper stance

The Black Bay Chrono has always sat slightly apart from the rest of Tudor’s best-known sports watch family.

It carries the dive-watch cues that define the Black Bay line, including strong water resistance and snowflake hands, yet it also leans into motorsport with a fixed tachymeter bezel and chronograph layout.

Until now, the standard Black Bay Chrono measured 41mm across, 14.2mm thick and 49.9mm from lug to lug.

The Bumblebee changes that equation with a 39mm diameter, 13.1mm thickness and 47mm lug-to-lug measurement.

Those numbers matter because this isn’t merely a new dial colour on an existing case.

It is a more compact Black Bay Chrono, and the reduction should make the watch easier to wear without stripping away its sports-watch identity.

The updated case also brings a more traditional crown profile, while the caseback has a more domed shape.

That combination helps the case flanks appear less tall than on the larger Black Bay Chrono, an important visual change for a watch that has often felt deliberately substantial.

The Bumblebee dial brings the attitude

The dial is where Tudor lets the watch become more playful.

Its matte yellow surface is paired with black sub-counters, blackened applied markers and blackened hands, giving the watch the high-contrast personality behind the Bumblebee name.

White Super-LumiNova fills the hands and markers, including the familiar snowflake hour hand.

The layout remains recognisably Black Bay Chrono, with a date display and a 45-minute chronograph counter alongside the running seconds.

A domed sapphire crystal sits above the dial, while the fixed bezel uses a black anodised aluminium insert with a tachymeter scale.

The chronograph pushers are still screwed, and the watch retains a 200m water-resistance rating, keeping one of the model’s practical strengths intact.

MT5813 movement and T-Fit bracelet

Inside the Black Bay Chrono 39 Bumblebee is Tudor’s calibre MT5813, the automatic chronograph movement long associated with the collection.

It uses a column wheel, runs at 4Hz and offers a power reserve of around 70 hours.

The movement is COSC-certified and Tudor regulates the assembled watch to a stated -2/+4 seconds per day standard.

It also features a silicon balance spring and variable inertia balance, both details that fit the brand’s modern approach to robust mechanical watchmaking.

The watch is delivered on a three-link stainless steel bracelet with polished and satin-brushed finishing.

Notably, the bracelet does without faux rivets and includes Tudor’s T-Fit micro-adjustment clasp, a practical feature that should suit the more wearable brief of the smaller case.

Where the 39mm Bumblebee fits in Tudor’s line-up

The Black Bay Chrono has grown more confident over the years, from the earlier 41mm models to the Panda editions and the more colour-forward Pink and Flamingo watches.

The Bumblebee continues that bolder direction, but its real significance is the case size.

For collectors who liked the specification of the Black Bay Chrono but found the standard model too large, the 39mm format could be the version that finally makes the concept click.

It won’t be as quiet as a monochrome sports chronograph, and that’s clearly not the point.

This is Tudor taking one of its more technically compelling watches and giving it both a stronger wrist presence and a more approachable footprint.
