Schwarz Etienne Gives the 1902 Petite Seconde a Darker Golden Hour

Schwarz Etienne’s 1902 line has become one of the La Chaux-de-Fonds manufacture’s more flexible canvases, spanning small seconds, power reserve and GMT interpretations without losing its crisp modern profile.

The new 1902 Petite Seconde Heure Dorée takes that familiar architecture into a darker register, using blackened titanium, a layered black dial and warm 4N details to evoke the last glow of daylight.

It’s also a notably tight proposition, with only eight pieces planned.

A blackened titanium case with a warmer edge

The case measures 39mm across, 10.90mm thick and 45.8mm lug to lug, dimensions that keep the watch firmly in contemporary daily-wear territory.

Grade 5 titanium gives the case lightness and resilience, while the multi-layer black DLC coating shifts the character of the 1902 toward something more discreet and architectural.

Schwarz Etienne hasn’t left the case as a single flat black surface.

The bezel carries a circular satin finish, while the lugs mix satin and polished surfaces and curve downward toward the wrist.

The titanium crown is also DLC-coated and engraved with the Schwarz Etienne logo, while water resistance is rated at 50 metres.

The dial plays shadow against gold

The dial is where the Heure Dorée name earns its place.

A silky grained centre sits beneath a black opaline upper plate, creating a subtle layered effect that changes with the light rather than shouting for attention.

The small seconds display remains at 6 o’clock, giving the watch its balanced, almost pocket-watch-inspired rhythm.

Against the black dial, the applied indices, minute track, small-seconds track and lancine-style hour and minute hands appear in 4N PVD.

The hands combine sandblasted and polished surfaces, adding texture to a colour scheme that could otherwise feel severe.

A polished 4N gold-toned Schwarz Etienne logo is applied to the dial, tying the warm accents together without crowding the layout.

The in-house micro-rotor movement gets a darker finish

Visible through the sapphire caseback is Schwarz Etienne’s ASE 300.00, an automatic micro-rotor calibre developed, produced and assembled in-house in La Chaux-de-Fonds.

The movement is made from 191 components, runs at 21,600 vibrations per hour and offers an 86-hour power reserve.

For this edition, the calibre is finished in anthracite and ruthenium tones to sit more naturally with the black and gold exterior.

The bridges feature circular and concentric Côtes de Genève, while the sandblasted mainplate has polished bevels and tone-on-tone engraving.

The micro-rotor is treated in 4N PVD, with polished and satin surfaces and a hand-polished bevel.

The ratchet wheel is hand-finished, engraved with the limited-edition designation and filled with anthracite lacquer.

Limited to eight pieces

The watch is fitted to a black Cordura strap with a black rubber lining, a practical pairing for the darker titanium case.

It closes with a Grade 5 titanium pin buckle treated with the same black multi-layer DLC coating and signed with the Schwarz Etienne logo.

At EUR 21,890 and limited to eight examples, the 1902 Petite Seconde Heure Dorée sits squarely in independent watchmaking territory.

Its appeal is likely to be strongest for collectors who want in-house movement substance, compact proportions and a more atmospheric take on a classical small-seconds layout.
