Oris Gives the Big Crown Pointer Date a Burgundy Cervo Volante Edition

Oris has added a warmer, more autumnal note to one of its most recognisable watches.

The Big Crown Pointer Date x Cervo Volante brings together the brand’s long-running pilot’s watch design with a burgundy dial and a deer hide strap made by the Swiss leather goods specialist Cervo Volante.

It’s a quietly handsome variation on a familiar formula, and the details are strongest where Oris has resisted overcomplication.

The Big Crown Pointer Date has been part of the Oris story since 1938, when it was conceived as a practical watch for pilots who needed strong legibility and easy crown operation.

This new version leans into the vintage side of the collection, using the familiar 40mm stainless steel case with a fluted bezel, oversized screw-down crown and double-domed sapphire crystal.

The burgundy dial is the obvious visual shift.

Inspired by the autumn colours around Oris’s home in Hölstein, it gives the watch a richer feel without moving it away from the utilitarian language that defines the Big Crown.

Cathedral-style hands, Arabic numerals and a peripheral date scale keep the design firmly in old-school pilot-watch territory.

The red-tipped pointer hand tracks the date around the outside of the dial, preserving one of the model’s most distinctive traits.

Cervo Volante’s deer hide strap adds substance

The Cervo Volante connection is more than a colour-and-strap exercise.

The Swiss company works with deer hides that would otherwise go unused after regulated red deer culls, turning them into leather goods and watch straps.

For this edition, Oris pairs the burgundy dial with a dark brown deer hide strap fitted with a quick-change system.

The leather is vegetable tanned in Switzerland, with natural markings and irregularities left visible rather than hidden.

That approach suits the Big Crown well, because the watch already trades on character rather than polish for polish’s sake.

Movement and everyday wear

Inside is the Oris calibre 754, an automatic movement derived from the Sellita SW 200-1 and fitted with a pointer date module.

It runs at 4Hz, offers a 41-hour power reserve and includes a stop-seconds function for precise setting.

The brand’s red rotor is visible through the caseback, adding a familiar Oris signature to the mechanical package.

At 12.2mm thick with a 48.2mm lug-to-lug measurement, the case should remain wearable for a broad range of wrists, while 50 metres of water resistance keeps it within everyday territory rather than true sports-watch use.
