Montblanc’s Nicolas Rieussec line has always occupied a particular corner of modern chronograph design.
It doesn’t treat the chronograph as just a sports-watch function, but as a mechanical link to writing, ink and the early history of recorded time.
The Star Legacy Nicolas Rieussec Chronograph Limited Edition 100 pushes that idea further with a rose gold case, a black dial covered in luminous historical inscriptions and a 100-piece production run.

An inking chronograph reimagined in lume
The watch takes its cue from Nicolas Rieussec’s 1821 timing device, which used ink to mark elapsed times as horses crossed the finish line at the Champ de Mars racetrack in Paris.
That invention helped give the chronograph its name, joining the Greek ideas of time and writing in a single mechanical instrument.
Montblanc makes that connection visible across the dial rather than leaving it as a footnote.
Against the black dial, luminous inscriptions reproduce handwritten details tied to the Academy of Sciences’ approval document, a silhouette of the Academy, a blueprint-like drawing of the original ink hand and Rieussec’s signature at the centre.
The result is theatrical, but not random.
It’s a watch that looks deliberately tied to paper, penmanship and documentation, which is exactly where Montblanc has the strongest claim to this story.
The signature rotating chronograph display
The time display keeps the Star Legacy side of the watch intact, using a white chapter ring with black Roman numerals, a railway-style minutes track and rose gold-coated leaf hands.
Below it, two white domed chronograph discs rotate in place of conventional hands.
The left disc measures 60 seconds, while the right records up to 30 minutes.
A diamond-shaped blued steel bridge stretches across the two counters and acts as the reading point, echoing the layout of Rieussec’s original ink-recording apparatus.
There’s also a practical travel layer built into the dial.
A skeletonised GMT hand sits hidden behind the main hour hand, while the local hour hand can be advanced in one-hour jumps through the crown.
The second time zone is paired with a day-night aperture at 9 o’clock, and the date appears at 6 o’clock inside a rose-gold-coloured frame secured by two polished screws.
On the raised flange, Montblanc adds two more period cues with “Compteur de Mr Rieussec” on one side and “Paris, Le 15 Octobre 1821” on the other.
Rose gold case and manufacture calibre MB R200
The 43mm polished rose gold case keeps the familiar pebble-like shape of the Nicolas Rieussec family.
At 15.01mm thick, it has the presence expected of an automatic chronograph with stacked displays and a shaped case construction.
The fluted onion crown at 3 o’clock nods to pocket-watch design and carries the Montblanc star emblem.
The monopusher at 8 o’clock starts, stops and resets the chronograph, keeping the case architecture cleaner than a conventional two-pusher layout.
Through the sapphire display back, the in-house calibre MB R200 shows the more technical side of the watch.
It’s an automatic integrated monopusher chronograph with a column wheel and vertical clutch, running at 4Hz and delivering a 72-hour power reserve from twin barrels.
The movement also suits frequent travellers, as both the GMT hand and date can be adjusted forwards or backwards via a rapid-reset mechanism.
The openworked rotor is finished with grain d’orge engraving and shaped with the Montblanc star profile.
Even the strap keeps the writing-instrument thread alive.
The black calfskin strap tapers toward a nib-like point, while its lining is printed with sections of an 1821 map of Paris.
