Minerva The Unveiled Crownless Makes the Bezel Do the Work

The crown is so familiar that most watch lovers stop seeing it, even though it remains one of the most-used parts of a mechanical watch.

Minerva’s The Unveiled Crownless asks a simple but provocative question. What if the case flank didn’t need one at all?

The result is a polished steel watch with a rose-gold bezel that handles both winding and time-setting, bringing an old Minerva idea into a very contemporary form.

Remove the crown from a wristwatch and the whole object changes more than expected.

On The Unveiled Crownless, the polished and satin-brushed steel case becomes unusually balanced, while the warm 18k rose-gold fluted bezel takes on both visual and functional importance.

The watch measures 41.5mm across and 11.99mm thick, so it isn’t trying to pass as a small vintage dress piece.

Even so, the curved lugs help it sit close, and the absent crown gives the right side of the case a clean uninterrupted line.

There’s also a practical benefit on the wrist, since nothing presses into the hand during wear.

The main control is the bidirectional bezel, which replaces the usual crown action.

A small lever hidden at the back of the case changes the bezel’s role between winding and time-setting, making the concept more approachable than it might sound.

With the lever in one position, turning the bezel winds the hand-wound calibre. Move the lever, and the same bezel adjusts the time.

A rose-gold plaque on the left side of the case is engraved with “Depuis 1858”, a quiet reminder of Minerva’s long life in Villeret.

A 1950s-inflected dial under a box sapphire crystal

The case may be the experiment, but the dial keeps the watch anchored in Minerva’s classical language.

An ivory opaline centre is paired with a guilloché outer ring, giving the dial enough texture without making it busy.

Applied faceted hour markers circle the dial, with triangular markers at 3 and 9 o’clock and a large Arabic numeral at 12.

Rose gold-coated dauphine hands match the bezel’s warmth, while the recessed small-seconds display at 6 o’clock gives the layout a formal balance.

The dial sits beneath a domed box-shaped sapphire crystal with double anti-reflective coating, while a sapphire display back opens the view to the movement.

The M15.08 calibre behind the idea

A crownless watch needs more than a clever case, and Minerva developed the manufacture calibre M15.08 for this model.

The movement is made in the brand’s Villeret workshops and shares its lineage with Minerva’s Pythagore calibre 10-48, developed in 1943 by André Frey, as well as the architecture used in the 1858 Geosphere Annual Calendar.

It is manually wound, runs at 18,000 vibrations per hour and offers an 80-hour power reserve.

Through the caseback, the rhodium-plated German silver bridges show Geneva stripes, polished bevels and circular graining.

The large free-sprung balance, arrow-shaped regulator and considered bridge layout give the calibre the sort of visual presence collectors expect from Minerva’s Villeret work.

The Unveiled Crownless is not a solution to a problem most people were complaining about, and that’s precisely what makes it interesting.

It takes one of the most ordinary interactions in mechanical watchmaking and turns it into something tactile, symmetrical and surprisingly intuitive, without making the watch feel like a concept piece.

For collectors drawn to Minerva’s Villeret finishing and to watches that challenge convention quietly rather than loudly, this is a thoughtful and unusually coherent proposition.
