Mercedes-Benz is already looking beyond the current G-Class, and that matters because few modern SUVs carry such a clearly defined identity.
The challenge is obvious. The next G-Class will need to move forward without sanding away the square-edged character, off-road credibility and cultural weight that made it one of Mercedes’ most recognisable nameplates.
At a glance
- Mercedes-Benz is developing the next-generation G-Class.
- Mercedes-AMG CEO Stefan Weckbach says the future model must retain the qualities that define the G-Class.
- No launch timing, technical changes or availability details have been confirmed.
The G-Class brief is still about continuity
Mercedes-AMG CEO Stefan Weckbach, who also oversees the G-Class and Maybach businesses, has confirmed that development work is underway on the next G-Class.

His message was less about reinvention and more about stewardship.
“For the G-Class, we need to make sure that it’s going to be transferred to the future, but not losing its soul,” Weckbach said. “We’re working currently on the next-generation, and we will make sure that it stays a G-Class.”
That wording is important because the G-Class is not a model Mercedes can casually reshape around passing design trends.
Its appeal rests on recognisable proportions, a utilitarian origin story and an image that spans military-grade function, luxury status and enthusiast credibility.
Modernisation without losing the square silhouette
Mercedes hasn’t disclosed what will change for the next-generation SUV.
There’s no confirmed arrival date, no published technical specification and no detail yet on the powertrain strategy or cabin architecture.
What’s clear is that Mercedes understands the G-Class buyer isn’t simply shopping for the newest technology package.
For this nameplate, progress has to be measured against continuity.
Too much change risks diluting what makes the G-Class distinct, while too little would make it harder for the SUV to meet future expectations around refinement, technology and usability.
Why the next G-Class will be closely watched
The G-Class occupies a rare position in the Mercedes-Benz portfolio.
It’s a luxury product, an off-road symbol and a design object whose basic visual language remains central to its value.
That makes the next-generation model a delicate assignment.
Mercedes will be expected to update the SUV for a new era while keeping the sense that it’s still recognisably the same machine at heart.
For existing owners, collectors and buyers drawn to the G-Class precisely because it doesn’t look like everything else, Weckbach’s comments are a reassuring early signal.
The next G-Class is coming, but Mercedes appears to know that its future depends on protecting the qualities that made it matter in the first place.
