Kuoe Returns the Royal Smith 90-012 Chronograph With Panda Dials

Kuoe has brought the Royal Smith 90-012 Automatic Chronograph back into focus with two of the most enduring dial formats in the chronograph playbook.

The new panda and reverse panda versions lean into the Japanese brand’s fondness for 20th-century watch design, but the appeal here isn’t just nostalgia.

At 37mm, this is a compact automatic chronograph with old-school proportions, a layered dial and a mechanical movement that gives it more substance than its diameter might suggest.

The Royal Smith 90-012 measures 37mm across, putting it firmly in the current return to smaller case sizes.

Power comes from the Seiko calibre NE86A, an automatic chronograph movement running at 28,800 vibrations per hour.

The movement offers a 45-hour power reserve and supports hours, minutes, seconds and chronograph functions.

For a watch at this price, the use of a fully mechanical automatic chronograph calibre is a meaningful part of the proposition.

It also explains the case thickness, which should be the main fit consideration for anyone drawn to the 37mm diameter.

The rectangular pushers are firm in operation, which may not please every user, but that resistance also helps prevent accidental starts and stops.

Bracelets, strap options and positioning

Kuoe gives the two dial versions slightly different personalities through their bracelets.

The reverse panda is paired with a five-link steel bracelet, while the panda comes on a three-link bracelet that gives it a sportier feel.

Both bracelets use a quick-release system, and each watch is supplied with an additional German cowhide leather strap.
