Greubel Forsey has never treated finishing as decoration, but the Balancier QM makes the point unusually explicit.
This compact white gold watch is the first to carry the brand’s Qualité Musée standard, an in-house benchmark intended to push every visible and hidden component toward museum-grade execution.
It also gives the GF09 calibre a new role in the collection, placing craft and mechanics on equal footing rather than using finishing as a supporting act.

Qualité Musée moves finishing into the foreground
The Balancier QM marks the debut of Greubel Forsey’s Qualité Musée designation, a standard developed around the idea that even the smallest components should withstand close inspection as objects of art.
Greubel Forsey has used hand-finishing since its founding in 2004, but this new seal formalises the expectation across micro-components, including areas most owners will never see without a loupe or a watchmaker’s bench.
The work is tied to the brand’s EWT hand-finishing laboratory, where the same philosophy is intended to reach everything from comparatively simple three-hand watches to the house’s most complex chiming pieces.
On the Balancier QM, the conical balance bridge alone carries seven hand-finishing techniques, including black polishing, spotting, circular graining, straight graining and polished bevels.
The bi-level escape wheel is bevelled and polished on both sides, including the hidden side, while the pallet jewels are convex rather than flat.
The engraved Qualité Musée plate is placed inside the movement rather than displayed openly, a detail that says plenty about the attitude behind the watch.
A smaller white gold case with a deep architectural dial
The Balancier line has a particular place in Greubel Forsey’s history because it was the brand’s first family to step away from the tourbillon.
Instead of a rotating escapement, the concept centred on a large 12.6mm balance wheel displayed dial-side, making the regulating organ part of the visual architecture.
The Balancier QM keeps the 39.6mm diameter associated with the more compact evolution of the line, with a case height of 9.45mm before the domed sapphire crystals are included.
In 18k white gold, the case alternates a hand-polished bezel and lugs with straight graining across the caseband and caseback.
The dial is pure Greubel Forsey in its layering, with eccentric hours and minutes, a small seconds display and a sector-style power reserve arranged across a multi-level gold landscape.
Deep circular recesses reveal the large variable-inertia balance wheel and one of the two mainspring barrels, the latter carrying a relief Greubel Forsey engraving.
The raised hour and minute chapter ring sits to the right, with flame-blued steel hands and a gold power reserve arc running beneath part of its perimeter.
At 8 o’clock, the small seconds counter sits on a lower section of the frosted mainplate, reinforcing the sense that this is less a flat dial than a miniature mechanical terrain.
The GF09 calibre behind the display
The manually wound GF09 movement is built from 298 components and uses two coaxial, series-coupled fast-rotating barrels to deliver a 72-hour power reserve.
Its large variable-inertia balance runs at 21,600 vibrations per hour and uses six gold mean-time screws.
The calibre also includes an in-house hairspring with a Phillips terminal curve and a stop-balance function for precise time setting.
Through the frosted caseback, parts of the winding system are visible, including wheels with concave hand-polished sinks and bevelled polished teeth.
The clicks and springs are black-polished, continuing the same finishing language found on the dial side.

The Balancier QM will speak most clearly to collectors who already understand Greubel Forsey’s mechanical language but want to see the brand make finishing the headline rather than the footnote.
It’s still an unmistakably complex independent watch, but its real argument is quieter and more exacting, found in the polished bevels, hidden surfaces and obsessive treatment of parts that most brands would never ask an owner to notice.
