Glashütte Original Gives the Seventies Chronograph a Reverse Panda Dial

Glashütte Original’s Seventies line has always been the brand’s more angular counterpoint to its classical Saxon watchmaking language.

The new Seventies Chronograph XV Limited Edition leans into that contrast with a matt black lacquer dial, silver galvanised counters and the practical density of the brand’s in-house flyback chronograph.

Limited to 100 pieces, it’s aimed squarely at collectors in Germany, Austria and Switzerland who want the Seventies case in one of the chronograph world’s most enduring dial configurations.

A sharper monochrome take on the Seventies case

The Seventies Chronograph XV keeps the familiar 40mm by 40mm stainless steel case, a shape that gives the watch its distinct TV-screen profile without tipping into costume design.

Brushed and polished finishing helps define the case geometry, while the integrated bracelet reinforces the period character that gives the collection its name.

At 46.4mm lug-to-lug, the watch remains relatively contained for a square chronograph, though its 14.1mm thickness gives it the wrist presence expected from a fully equipped automatic chronograph.

The reverse panda dial is the point of difference here.

Glashütte Original uses a matt black lacquered surface with silver galvanised totalisers, creating a cleaner and more restrained counterpoint to some of the brighter Seventies editions seen in recent years.

White gold hands and applied markers filled with Super-LumiNova keep the display crisp, while the black Panorama Date preserves the dial’s tonal discipline.

The chronograph display does more than the usual three-register layout

This isn’t a conventional tri-compax chronograph dial dressed in a square case.

The Seventies Chronograph XV combines central hours and minutes with a small seconds display, a power-reserve indication, Glashütte Original’s Panorama Date and a chronograph layout that includes central seconds, a 30-minute counter and a 12-hour totaliser shown through an arched window.

That arched hour counter is one of the watch’s defining details, giving the dial a visual signature while keeping the chronograph information compact.

The Panorama Date remains a Glashütte Original hallmark, using two non-overlapping discs for a large date display that feels integrated rather than added on.

Calibre 37-02 gives the case its balance

Inside is the in-house calibre 37-02, an automatic integrated flyback chronograph movement with a column wheel.

Because the chronograph is integrated rather than modular, the crown and pushers sit on the same horizontal plane, which matters on a square case where imbalance would be easy to notice.

The movement runs at 28,800 vibrations per hour, uses a silicon hairspring and stores 70 hours of power reserve.

Finishing is visible through the sapphire caseback, including Glashütte stripes, polished bevels and a skeletonised rotor carrying the double-G emblem.

The Seventies Chronograph XV works because it doesn’t try to soften the character of the collection.

It keeps the square case, the integrated bracelet and the technically dense movement, then gives the package a disciplined black-and-silver dial that should age more quietly than the bolder colour-led editions.
